after 1930
« on: Tuesday 25 August 09 09:16 UTC (UK) »

Morning

I have just had a look at the resource section for the USA, but i was wondering if someone could tell me in simple terms what information is available and searchable for after 1930

presumably it varies state to state  i'm particulary looking for New York and California.

Many Thanks

Toni

In general, I find www.deathindexes.com to have good lists of what's available by state/county.  Some of the links are to subscription sites, but it's pretty helpful.

If you're looking for info on a male born on or between 28 Apr. 1877 and 16 Feb. 1897, WWII Draft Registration Cards are available (indexed on Ancestry or not indexed or complete but free at http://familysearchlabs.org/).

The California Death Index from 1940-1997 is free on rootsweb.com.  Ancestry has birth records for California from 1905-1995, CA marriage records from 1960-1985, and California passenger lists through 1957.

There's not much comprehensive for New York after 1930.  If you're looking in New York City, www.italiangen.org has some good indexes that cover up through the 1940's.

As far as secondary sources after 1930, you can find things like newspaper articles or city directories on various sites such as Ancestry, footnote.com, and newspaperarchives.com.  The New York Times is searchable back to the 1800's.  http://www.nytimes.com/
