George Walter - Completed
« on: Tuesday 25 August 09 10:06 UTC (UK) »

Hi,  I am in Tasmania and bought an 1870 edition of A Memoir of Jane Austen from a bookseller here.  This book was given to George Walter (born 1792) by his son George Whitaker Walter in 1870, and George was related to Jane Austen.  His father James Walter was the godson of George Austen (J.A.'s father) and his grandfather William Hampson Walter was J.A.'s half-uncle.
I am so interested in the story of the book that I bought and am researching all the names inscribed on the frontispiece.  I know that George was married and had at least 2 sons by his first wife, I have only found her name 'Maria'.   I would like to know any details of this first marriage and the children born from it.   Any information would be appreciated thank you!

Hi Palawa, welcome to RootsChat Smiley

You haven't mentioned any connection with Lincolnshire, but perhaps this marriage is relevant-

28 Aug 1815 at Market Rasen
George WALTER to Maria CLAPHAM

Children perhaps
Oct 1816 George Whitaker
11 Dec 1817 James Henry
18 Dec 1818 James
2 May 1820 Louisa
15 June 1828 Maria Harriet (at Market Rasen, others at Grimsby)

then a burial at Market Rasen
19 July 1828, Maria WALTER (33)

and perhaps
1 Dec 1830 at Wrawby
George WALTER (wid) to Mary Ann SHARPE (wid)

Hi Geoff-E,  Thank you so much!!!

It's the first time I've seen the children's names aside from George Whitaker and James.  I knew that George Walter had married Mary Ann Sharpe (but didn't know that she was also widowed), and that George came to Van Diemen's Land in 1838, followed by his wife in 1840.

Where did you pick up this information from? The date and detail of the first marriage to Maria looks right to me.

Lincs FHS have published a marriage index for Westwold Deanery which includes Market Rasen.  I have quoted from that index.

I'm awfully sorry ... Mary Ann SHARPE wasn't a widow.  Embarrassed

Yet another "D'oh moment!"

Thanks for the correction  Grin ~ you've been a great help with filling in a much needed puzzle piece.

My next step is trawling through the Tasmanian Archives, so the hunt continues!!
