Hi
I live in Melbourne, Australia and was wondering whether anyone could help me with Llanfachreth Parish Baptism records around 1795.
I have traced Humphrey Pugh (my great, great, great grandfather) back to Llanfachreth through the English census records (1841, 51, 61 & 81) which consistently list his birth place and date as Llanfachreth, Merionethshire, 1795.
Although born in Wales, he lived most of his life as a carpenter in Coventry with his English wife Sarah whom he married in Coventry in 1826. His marriage certificate does not list his parents just witnesses from Coventry so I have no other Welsh connection.
Any insights welcome.
Regards, Nigel Pugh

In case Nigel is unfamiliar with patronymics - it would be Humphrey ap Hugh meaning son of Hugh which became Pugh. Just google the word as there is a lot to understand. It makes it even more difficult to trace earlier ancestors.
Good luck
Peter

Dolgellau - Thank you very much for the information - just when I thought it was coming to an end, a whole new area opens up !
Couple of questions: 1) Are the Llanfachreth Bishop's Transcripts available on line? I'd like to follow up Humphrey's siblings to see if I can draw any other conclusions and confirm this is him. He was married in Coventry and had five witnesses but none of them were Pugh's - I'm waiting on the certificate to be delivered but possibly one of his siblings was there.
2) Where the Transcript states Hugh Jones of Benrhos, does that mean he was born in Benrhos and moved to Llanfachreth? I assume this place is Penrhos on an English map but it appears to be quite far from Llanfachreth.
Peter - I google'd the Welsh patronymics system and was fascinated with what I read.

Thank you very much for looking up all these details! With this data I can now bridge the gap to the online 1813 - 1832 BT's and then the census data.
A quick look at their first child John (who dies in 1842) shows him on the 1841 census for Llanfachreth village. He also used Pugh for his surname.
Thanks again, I really appreciate your help and will let you know how I go.

Yes - I can confirm that Mary's parents were Morris Jones and Jane Williams. I was fortunate enough to find Morris (Maurice) Jones Will which had both Jane and Mary as witnesses plus John Pugh (Mary's oldest son).
I also found John Pugh's Will which left 2 pounds to each of his sisters (Jane, Gwen, Mary and Ellen) and brothers (Morris, Hugh, William and Humphrey). This confirms most of the names you gave me.
