What about a RootsChat gathering in Sydney?
« on: Wednesday 26 August 09 03:47 UTC (UK) »

Hello  there all

Now I  realise  this  should be posted on  the TOT Boards but a lot of our fellow RCERS don't post on  there, so PLEASE Mods an you leave this here for a good week or more.... Grin

I  am  coming down to Sydney in mid November and wondered if any  Rootschatters in Sydney and surrounds of course if you are willing to travel might be interested in a meeting.

I  have no idea as yet as to where etc  but let's see who might be interesed and any suggestions you  might have and who might want to organize etc etc etc

kind thoughts Jenn

Hi there,

I am interested!  Of course depends on the date etc, but can I suggest meeting at the Quay mid morning and perhaps taking a ferry ride somewhere on the harbour - to Manly etc say for lunch? - Just an Opinion, to keep the ball rolling so to write!

Excellent IDEA
Could suggest this to fellow roots chatters (my friends)
Could we meet where we can bring some of our research i.e a place where we could use a table and sit down with paper and pencil ?
The coming together of fellow family historians  would enable some of us to solve some brick walls
I thought a library or botanic gardens ....
rootschat has been very helpful to my family search

Umm, that sounds great -

possibly say the State Library up in Macquarie Street or
Sydney City Library's branch at Old Customs House at the Quay
or .... Not sure if there's under cover area at the Gardens.

Umm, I do have a brickwall, but its a "John and Mary Smith" variety, so don't panic - I wouldn't expect anyone to spend time hunting out possibles, I would rather chat and exchange ideas and get to know fellow Rchatters over coffee and cake.

There's also the Parramatta heritage centre, but I don't know if there's a separate area for a group to get together.  They do have good resources though and readers that can print off copies etc.

Umm, my thoughts would be that a meeting would be about getting to talk with each other and share ideas and themes for futher research and to enjoy each others company.  I don't know that I would be much good at solving others brick walls - cannot solve my own!

Hello  there Turramurra,
I  don't know  that "we " could do much  to help  with a speciifc search except to offer advice.  IT  would be a bit hard to do  without resources on hand.

JM's idea was along  the same thoughts as mine, a getogether to put faces to names and a friendly cuppa.

But I am open to all and any suggestions

Bit More,

Apparently The Observatory (Watson Road, Observatory Hill The Rocks) is open during the day, for tours etc perhaps we could meet there?
I don't have a particular preference, just offering suggestions --  perhaps any of the attractions listed at this link http://www.sydney-australia.biz/attractions/

Dear everyone
Yes the solving of problems would be rather difficult BUT some of my best leads have come from chance remarks from other keen family historians
I am such  school teacher !!! (even in Retirement ) that's why I mentioned the brick walls !!!

Let's all bring a sandwich and have a spring picnic with plenty of CHAT!!!

What a great idea, that would be a first for Sydney wouldn't it?

Doesn't look like one in Melbourne this year, not putting my hand up this time, too many sickies around to take a chance. Sad

Hope the Sydney one is as much fun as we have had in Melbourne.
Just swap ideas, not enough time to research, far too much fun and chatter happening. Grin

That's a shame, Margaret!  Never mind...  Like you, I wish the Sydney ones well in their meet.
