Margaret married a Thomas DUNCAN on nov 2 1874 at the home of Mr G E Read in Gisborne
according to BDM a Margaret Duncan died in 1903 aged 77 – which would make her birth year 1826. I think this could be our Margaret.

perhaps we have solved the problem
would need to look at death cert

Cheers Peter

Hi Peter

Well, that's interesting.   Cheesy

What is your source of this marriage information ?

The marriage doesn't appear to have been officially recorded (I've checked two sources - can't see it at all ?)

Hi Lu / Peter

I can tell you that there are ITM cards for this couple:

DUNCAN, Thomas
MORTON (BOWDEN) (widow), Margaret
Turanga, 1874.
BDM 20; 19; p221; #95

BUT this doesn’t confirm that it was made “official”
as Lu has already said, this marriage doesn’t appear on other “official” sources
maybe the ITM register should be checked to see exactly what is going on…..

Looks like that has solved the mystery. Well done. Death date matches IE 77 takes back to 1826 birth date.

her children came out to NZ on the 'Ida Ziegler' after Henry and Margaret had set up business in Napier. Mary Ann, William , Charles, Emily & Margaret came as nominated immigrant's. My questions are 1) what became of Charles Bowden and 2) has the date of arrival and vessel been confirmed for Henry & Margaret?

Yes
They are two very good questions
Charles is listed in the Hawkes Bay Herald as being on the Ida Zeigler
but have not seen anything else on him
And Yes when did Henry Luttrell MORTON arrive in New Zealand
have found him in Papers past  regarding licence for hotel
pre  1866

Here's two more mysteries to add to this family -
1) William B. Morton purchased a plot at Old Napier Cemetery on 24 Aug 1903.
This plot contains Thomas Henry MORTON who died 13 may 1903 age 48, therefore born 1855.  Huh His wife was Jane Goggin. I have found five children on BDM Index (and Napier Cemetery).
They are
Frances Mabel Morton (Dec 1891-12 Feb 1892)
Thomas Henry Morton (1893-1959)
James Herbert Morton (1895-1956)
Kathleen Erin Morton (1898-)
John Baden Morton (1900 - 1957)

And
2) Who is this buried at the Napier Cemetery?
Mary Morton, born Clare, Ireland died 27 Sept 1893, aged 85. In NZ 20 years.

you have raised some very good questions
I have no idea who any of these people are
must be extended family?
perhaps one of Henry luttrell Morton's brothers also came out to New Zealand

There is a family story about a Capt. Robert McDonald Morton bringing a ship load of people from Nova Scotia

According to Colleen Sheffield's book " Men came Voyaging" (about early Helensville) a Captain Morton was engaged by John and Helen McLeod and families as the master of the schooner Sea Gull, which brought them from Nova Scotia on 22/11/1861 to Auckland, arriving on 24/5/1862.
