Hi,
I have a Katherine Irwin b. Enderby c1851 (from 1891 census)
In D1880 Katherine Milestone married Harlow Irwin in Islington and I know about her life after this.
I have looked for a birth for Katherine Milestone for that date but not found one.
However in the 1871 census I have found a Kate Milestone (and my Katherine was always known as Kate, even signing as that on her daughters' marriages) who is born in Leics but in 1847. This Kate Milestone is married to an Edward Milestone b. London and who is a beerhousekeeper. I can't find either Katherine or Edward on the 1881 census which would seem to support the theory that Katherine is widowed after 1871 and marries Harlow Irwin in 1880. There is an Edward Milestone who dies in 1880 but in Bradford.
I then looked for Edward Milestone's marriage and there is an Edward Milestone who marries J1868 in Kensington to a Catherine Dalby (a good E. Midlands name)
However, I cannot find a Catherine Dalby b. Enderby either. Any ideas short of buyig Catherine's marriage certificate? I may eventually go down this line but as she is a 'step' I have other certificates to buy first.
Thanks Brie

Tati,
Thank-you for this. It looks a distinct possibility.
I've been trying to find Catherine on the 1851 and 1861 but still no joy. Are you using Ancestry? I don't get anything for Catherine, Jane or even Montague so I'm wondering if they have been mistranscribed on there. I believe there is somewhere you can put the census reference number but I can't find it. But I'll keep trying
Thanks again, I know I'm not chasing a phantom now.

Dad William is widowed by 1851 so that is probably why Catherine is living away from home. Montague she is staying with is probably Williams brother.
1851 Census Bradmore, Nottinghamshire HO107/2128/480/7
William DALBY, head, 30, widow, cordwainer, Enderby Montague Dalby, son, 4, Enderby William MARRIOTT, ?, mar, 33, framework knitter, Notts Sarah MARRIOT, servant, mar, 29, housekeeper, Notts
Death; Caroline DALBY, December 1850, Basford (Notts), 15 326
By 1861 William has remarried, still in Notts and there are 2 more little Dalbys. He is incorrectly put as born Bardmore, Notts, but Montague is Enderby, Leics. RG9/2446/14/1 Probably married Mary ATTEWELL, Nottingham, June 1853, 7b 300

Trish and Tati,
Thank-you very much, wonderful sleuthing.
With cordwainers and frame work knitters they should be a well shod family.
I saw Montague when I was doing my searches and wondered how he fitted in. On the 1881 census he is a licensed victualler in London and if you scroll down this link you will see a photograph of his pub.
