Is there anyone out there who would be happy to do a census look up for me?
I would be so grateful. I have some very elusive Irish ancestors who settled in Greenock and not very much information to go on.
I came across this thanks to another member today and wondered if someone could find him for me
John Grant and wife living at 16 Cathcart Street. There is an entry in Greenock Telegraph for their daughter - not named - being born in 1872 at this address.
I am particularly interested to find out if John was born in Ireland.
I'd be grateful for any help. Maggie

Hi Maggie,
Need a little bit more info to be certain - Grant is a common name in Scotland. What was John's wife's name? Was it Christina Boyle?
There was a John Grant and wife Christina, with family (including a daughter born in 1872) at 24 Bank Street in 1881. Was John a spirit merchant? If so, he was indeed born in Ireland.
I can't find them in 1871, when they already had a son James, born in 1870. John & Christina married in 1869.
1881 details 24 Bank St West Greenock Renfrew 564/1 ED 24 p4

Hi folks, so sorry, I can only log in during the day so didn't see your posts til this morning. Will pm you all with a thanks. Am so sorry, I didn't have any further info on the John Grant in Greenock - no wife of children's names.
I do think that' s the right family but I'm not sure they are the family I'm looking for. I'm going to have to try to establish if John has a link to my Irish family in county Down.
I'm trying indeed to find my grandfather's Grant family in Greenock. He lived with adopted parents after birth in Gourock, Angus McKenzie and his wife Sarah. But at some point he went back to the Grant family in Greenock and I've not been able to find anything on them. It may be that I have to wait for the 1911 census, but even then think my grandfather went back and forth between the two families and I'm not sure where he would have been in 1911.
Thanks all for your help.

Hi all, got some computer gremlins at the moment. Have tried to pm the ladies who were helping and not sure if they went through. Thanks for your help, I so appreciate it. Am posting the pm here so that I can fill you in on any details. May not be possible to pursue this at the moment I know but just in case - Little Nell's look up for me led me to believe there might be hope....
I have my grandfather's birth cert - he was born Angus John Grant in Belfast 21 May 1903. I have details of his mother's birth Julia Grant born Belfast 1879. Her brother Patrick born Belfast 1878. Mother and father Owen Grant and Anne Carroll married Dublin 1876. But Owen seems to be from C Down and there are quite a few Grants there. His father's name I have too Rodger Grant.
My grandfather was known as Angus McKenzie on all his official documentation thereafter, he was married, buried and joined navy under that name.
I also found a poor relief app for Sarah McKenzie - she was living Bearhope Street in 1919 and my grandfather is with her then.
I can find quite a bit on the adopted side of the family, got Sarah and Angus's marriage and death certs. Got them on the census 1901 at Royal Street Gourock. I even have my grandfather's private adoption arrangement, it was done through a solicitor in Glasgow and it's still in the family.
What I can't find anything on are the Grants of Greenock who took him in at some point, changed his name to Joseph. I was very interested in the John Grant who was a spirit dealer. He comes from Ireland when I look back at C Down Griffith's evaluation, three is a John Grant and a James Grant who live in the same area as our Grants - Owen, Rodger, Patrick. All come from he Clonduff area and are farmers. I looked at John Grant's death cert on Scotland's people. His father is James and he was a farmer. I'm not sure but there could be a tie here. He has sons called Patrick and Joseph and they are significant (though common names). John Grant was dead by the time my grandfather was born. Died but I wonder about his family, then older. Julia came to live in Greenock, became pregnant then went back to Ireland to have my grandfather. On adoption agreement she is a domestic servant at the Glasgow Caledonian Hotel in Central Station. Like Little Nell says, I may have to wait for 1911 census and that's it. Maybe just don't have enough info. But given he seems to have gone back and forth between the two families, there's no knowing where he'll be in 1911. May be with his adopted mother then too. Maggie
