According to the '81 and '91 censuses, my GG grandmother, Eliza RICHARDSON was born around 1849 in Old Hartlepool.
In September 1872, aged 23 and widowed, she married my GG grandfather Thomas Shufflebotham in Newcastle-under-Lyme, Staffs. Her father is given as Robert RICHARDSON, profession engineer. Her previous marriage was probably in Staffs as well, as their daughter's birthplace is given as Stoke-on-Trent.
Can anyone see likely candidates for Robert and Eliza in the 1851 census?

It's taken me ages to get in and post this- RC going slow and then restricting users but I'll post anyway!
I think this is her in 1871
15 Princes Street, Newcastle under Lyme (next door to a family of Shufflebottom) RG10/2831/118/38
Thomas Barlow, 29, Potter, b. Shrops, Wellington Eliza Barlow, 22, b. Yorks, New Hartley Charlotte Barlow, 4, b. Staffs, Hanley James Barlow, 10 months, b. Staffs, Newcastle Robert Richardson, bro in law, 17, Potter, b. Yorks, Witton Park
and this might be the likely family in 1851:
Old Quarrington, Durham HO107/2391/ 596/35
Richardson Robert, 26, coal wigher (?), b. Durham, Dalton le Dale (deaf) Mary, 2 21, b. Cumberland, Workington Eliza, 2, b. Northumberland, Hartley Mary A, 3 weeks, b. Durham, Old Quarrington Ann Nutter, wife's sister, 14, servant, b. Cumberland, Workington

Now we're back to speed, I'll explain my reasoning ~
In 1901 there is no place of birth given
In 1891 she was born Old Hartley Pool also a stepdaughter to Thomas called Charlotte aged 24 who fits with the Charlotte Barlow on the 1871
In 1881 she was born West Hartlepool
In 1871 she was born New Hartley, Yorks and with them is 'brother in law', Robert Richardson.
I have so far not found Eliza on the 1861. There's an outside possiblity for her brother, Robert, in Yorkshire with his grandparents but I'm not yet convinced.
The family seem to have moved around and it is likely that Eliza wasn't sure where she was born. The common word is 'Hartley'
The only family on the 1851 that I can find that fits is the one in Quarrington.

That's great - thanks very much Gadget.
That's definitely her in 1871, as I have Charlotte as Thomas Shufflebotham's step-daughter in the '91 census. Son James is not in either the '81 or '91 censuses though, so I didn't know about him. It's interesting that the Shufflebothams were next door - would you be kind enough to transcribe their 1871 return for me?
Thomas Shufflebotham and Eliza didn't waste much time, as Thomas Barlow was still alive in April 1871.
If that is her in 1851, she was a twin born New Hartley Northumberland (I'm not aware of a New Hartley in Yorks). It's plausible that the census enumerator in Newcastle-under-Lyme assumed that this must be Hartlepool.
Whatever Robert Richardson's job was, his deafness didn't seem to affect it; evidently his work took him to mines across the north of England judging by the birthplaces of the family. I wonder where he is in 1871? He is not noted as deceased on the Shufflebotham marriage certificate.

It looks as though the entire family have only a hazy idea of their whereabouts or birthplaces.
Robert juniors birthplace is given as Witton Park Yorks; the only Witton Park I can find is near Bishops Auckland Co Durham (there are various Whittons, though).

Here's the Shufflebottoms in 1871:
14 Princes Street, Newcastle under Lyme RG10/2831/118/38
Shufflebottom Edward, 50, brush seller, b. Staffs, Stoke Mary A, 54, b. Staffs, Wolstanton Samuel, 17, potter, b. Staffs, Newcastle William, 14, ostler, b. Staffs, Newcastle
I'm not sure if it's the same family as Thomas because of place of birth.

Thanks again Gadget. The Shufflebottoms look like a coincidence. Thomas' father is given as Robert SHUFFLEBOTHAM on Thomas' marriage cert.
Looking again at the 1851 data - Mary and Eliza aren't twins even though they're given the same age; they've got different birthplaces.
Perhaps Mary is Robert's wife and her age has been wrongly transcribed - from FreeBMD I found Robert RICHARDSON and Mary Ann NUTTER on the same page (Dec 1847 Stockton &c 24 217). Mary Ann has the same birthplace as Ann NUTTER has on the 1871 census; Workington, Cumberland.
