Yesterday I dropped my computer mouse on the floor (it was still plugged into laptop) and it broke. Today we bought a new one and it didn't work even though it said it was installed, returned it to shop, bought more expensive Microsoft mouse - still doesn't work. OH took laptop to shop and spoke to Microsoft people on the 'phone, who said they'd get back to him - but he doesn't know when
OH plugged mouse into his PC, worked instantly. Anyone any idea why it's not working on my laptop? I hate the pad on the laptop it's so inconvenient to use and am desperate to have a mouse working again.
Lizzie
ps. I've tried plugging the mouse into different ports, in case I'd somehow damaged the port I usually plug the mouse into.

I may be wrong, but...........
On my laptop I can go into the Bios setup and select either the touch pad or other pointing device. It might be worth having a look to see if the touch pad on yours has set itself as the default device, and needs changing.
Just an idea - someone else probably knows better.

Hi Lizzie ,
Had a similar problem as new mouse didn't work, took it back and was asked if I was using a mouse mat, if so, try without.
Used directly on to desk, no problems since.
Only a suggestion.

The other year i thought i would by a new fancy mouse, it lasted 2 weeks.Took it back had it replaced, that didn't last long so I got my money back.I was in a charity shop one day and found a good make one, like my old faithful Grey one.Paid 50p for it.Still using it now,I collected four others over time. But i don't think i will ever use them, unless i loose the rubber ball again
Celia P.S the plugs are two different kinds, so not sure if they would work on a laptop

Sorry I was slow getting back to you, but I managed to botch the whole thing up.
I thought I'd try turning off the touch pad, but unfortunately I can't do that with the 'F' keys as I could on my old laptop, so I had to go into the laptop control center (not control panel) and stupidly I turned off the touch pad Then I was stuck - how was I going to turn it on again when the mouse didn't work and now, neither did the control pad. We tried everything. In the end, we rescued the old mouse from the bin and by turning it upside down and pushing my finger against the light I could very slowly move the cursor but it took me ages to realise that to then turn off the programs that were up on the screen I had to push something that was now underneath and not on top of the mouse. Eventually, I managed to get to Start, All Programs and VAIO control center, then inch by inch (or should that be cm by cm) I managed to get to the page where I could enable the touch pad again. I had visions of spending pounds at a computer repair shop getting it fixed. Meanwhile, of course, a Microsoft engineer rang they think the problem is Vista - I don't see why because the old mouse worked on Vista - and he was going to somehow over the 'phone, connect his PC to my laptop to see why the mouse was not working. He may ring back tonight, tomorrow or Monday. If it still doesn't work, we're taking the mouse back and going to a different shop to buy the same make of mouse as I had previously - a Targus.
Lizzie
ps. I do know how to spell centre, above I'm using the spelling given.

Good old Vista. As a computer technician I wouldn't have Vista on any computer.

I don't understand why Vista should cause the problem. My old laptop had Windows XP. When I got my new laptop, I just plugged in the mouse I'd been using with XP and it worked. It's only since I've tried with a new mouse that I'm having problems.
Of course, everyone tells me I should just learn to use the touchpad, but I've explained to them that the only reason they find it convenient enough for them is that they are not touch typists and, therefore, the touchpad is slow enough for them. What annoys me about the touch pad, or maybe it's just different websites, but what makes the cursor move on one website, doesn't work on another. Sometimes I can only scroll up and down if I have the cursor on the bar at the side of a web page, whilst on other pages, I can scroll up and down where ever the cursor is. Also, it's so much easier to highlight something to copy and paste, or overtype or whatever, with a mouse.

Your not the only one when it comes to not liking the touch pad Many of my mature students don't like them.
One thing that I've just thought of. With the new mouse did it come with any drivers? Some need drivers in order for them to work.

Neither the mouse we returned nor the one we still have, came with drivers. Can't say that any we saw for sale had drivers either. Then again, the one I dropped and broke didn't have a driver, I just plugged it in and it worked.
Lizzie (still trying to come to terms with the dratted touch pad).

Hi Kathy
Yes he uses a wireless mouse. He was going to try it with my laptop at the time I'd made the botch up I described in an earlier post. The only problem is that it is quite old and the "thing" that makes it work is quite big and would get in the way on my desk. Also, of course, wireless mice have batteries in them and he doesn't use his mouse anywhere near as much as I do, but he still has to change the batteries fairly frequently.
If we get no joy from Microsoft, we'll try his mouse again on Tuesday (got grandchildren here all this weekend) and see how we get on.

Thanks Brian, I'll try that. There is only the normal Microsoft website address given on the package we have, but I'll go there and type in mouse driver.
Lizzie
Modified I;ve found some instructions about Recognition of USB devices" which I've printed off to try tomorrow (going out in a mo), but as I have a Microsoft mouse, there was nothing about downloading a driver. That seemed to apply to Logitech and other makes of mice.
