Good old Vista.  Grin As a computer technician I wouldn't have Vista on any computer.

I have ran Vista for nearly a year now and not a halfpenny of bother  Grin.
I use a microsoft thumbwheel mouse with my laptop and could not live without it.

Aren't you the lucky one. Smiley

Brian - You had the answer!  I went to Microsoft website, searched on drivers and found one to download for the mouse I have.  I did it and now it works.  Thank you.

Have to say though, it is nowhere near as smooth running as my old one, the wheel on the top is jerky, but I suppose I'll get used to it.

If you go into Ease of Access Center in Vista you should be able to customize your mouse settings.

Oldhippy - I'd already tried that, although via Control Panel - Mouse, but I've just tried it again via Ease of Access Center (which I'd never heard of and had to search for - it doesn't show up on All programs).  Whether I choose slow, fast or anywhere between for the speed of scrolling it makes no difference, the wheel does not move evenly and to scroll up and down smoothly I have to put the cursor on the blue line on the right hand side of the web page and click the left side of the mouse.  If I use the wheel to scroll the page just jumps.  For instance I tried to scroll up whilst typing this and instead of just moving as I expect, the page jumps so that I get right to the top of the page, where it says Welcome Back Lizzie you have XXX messages.

Well, I think everything is working again.  I got so fed up with the Microsoft mouse not scrolling properly that we took it back and got our money back.  We then went over to Staples and bought a Labtec notebook optical mouse pro, which is supposed to work without any special drivers.  I plugged it in and guess what - it didn't work.  My husband plugged it into his PC and it worked.  He went out for the evening and I decided to do a system restore to the day before I broke my other mouse.  The Labtec mouse then worked properly - hurrah - but I was celebrating too soon. Sad

I found I could no longer connect to the internet.  Huh  No networks, either ours or the neighbours showed up.  We tried everything and it looked as though I had somehow lost an Intel wireless something or other.  In desperation, I undid the system restore.  The laptop turned itself off and on again and a message came up to say that the "Unrestore" hadn't worked for some reason.  But never mind, the mouse is still working and I am connected to the internet.

Computers are very strange things.
