Runaway Husband in South Shields (William Robert Grant)
« on: Friday 28 August 09 15:35 UTC (UK) »

Hi Everyone

People were extremely helpful on another thread I posted about a mystery in the family, so I thought I would ask if anyone could help with another case that's been puzzling me.

My great-grandfather lived to a very great age, and wrote some recollections of his life shortly before he died. The paragraph below sums up what he has to say about his own father:

"When I was five years old my mother was left with six children to bring up. My Father had left us all. I was the third oldest, the youngest was one year old. My Mother had a hard time of it to bring us all up, having to go out every day to do washings."

His father was William Robert Grant, who was born in Monifieth, Angus, Scotland in 1858. He moved down to South Shields sometime before 1881, and was a confectioner. He married Isabella Clay in 1884 and left sometime around the year 1895, when his last child was born. After that, I have no idea what happened to him.

Does anyone have any idea about the best way of attempting to find him? I can't access any censuses apart from the one for 1881, so while he was probably still out there somewhere I have no way of finding out.

Thanks in advance!

Grant is such a common surname I'm afraid William could be just about any of the dozens born in Scotland c 1858.

He could have moved much farther south.....or back up to Scotland and if he didn't want to be found he could have changed his job so no one could pinpoint him.

This is going to be difficult  Roll Eyes

Thanks for the information, everyone - startlingly quick work.

Yes, the surname Grant is terribly difficult to research. My vision goes funny when I look at the census lists, there are so many William Grant's!

I guess it would have been useful if he didn't want to bother assuming another name, as no one would have taken any notice of a William Grant mysteriously turning up somewhere.

My Grandad did say his father told him that his father (gosh, that sounds confusing) had ran back off to Scotland to teach Highland dancing. I feel that he must have been confused though, because my GGG did indeed teach dance. Unless his son had a burning desire to take up his father's trade for some reason?
