I have found reference here to a silver medal presented to Julia Dignam of St. Douloughs, Dublin.
http://www.archive.org/stream/orderofhospitalo00bedfuoft/orderofhospitalo00bedfuoft_djvu.txt
It appears that the medal was awarded in either 1901 or 1902 for an act of bravery in 1892.
Does anyone have any further information on either Julia Dignam or the award?
Dara.

Many thanks for that. I had not seen the report before.
The 1902 date on the article ties in exactly with what I already have. I think I have found a death registration for the John Sharkey in 1891. If it is the right one, he was only 11 years old at the time.
Interestingly, the report you found comes from a New Zealand newspaper. Maybe someone can find a local newspaper report from 1891/1892 which gives some additional details.
Once again, many thanks.
Dara.

Shane,
This is brilliant. Many thanks for that. I believe Julia was about 16 years old at the time which makes it all the more remarkable.
I have Julia in the 1911 Census under her married name. I also found a Sharkey family in St. Doolaghs but no Francis. There is a Farrell Sharkey in the family about the right age. I wonder if this could be him?
There is or was a Lime Kiln Road Lane near St. Doolaghs but I cannot find it on Google Maps.
I would appreciate any further inputs on this as I have been trying to nail this story down for about a year now.
I very much appreciate your help. Many thanks.
Dara.

in June 1892 there a sale of a residence mentioned
Lime Hill, St. Doulough's, Raheny 'first class residence and walled in garden'
no specific mention of the occupiers names or a lime pit . The house is also mentioned in several editions of Thoms and is listed as vacant in 1894.
In Aug 1894 there an article on laying the foundation of the New RC church at Howth. The article goes on to describe where the materials used for construction where sourced .. other than the granite dressing from Aughrim the rest of the materials were obtained locally, including sand & stone from Lord Howth's estate, bricks from Portmarnock and lime from St. Doulagh's '..all famed for their excellent qualities...'

Hi Shane.
Interesting connection. Thank you for that one.
My grandfather, who was a nephew of Julia, worked for a time in the Portmarnock Brick Works. One of their specialities was the manufacture of curved facing bricks which were used on circular structures.
I'll check out some pictures of the church in Howth. From what I can remember, the facade is composed mainly of granite.
Julia's parents and grandparents were Agricultural Labourers. The family moved from Swords/Donabate area to Balgriffin area sometime about 1880-1890.
I have enough circumstantial evidence to be pretty sure that I am on the right track but what I need is a contemporary report to link Julia to the Birth and Baptismal records I already have.
I was hoping for a newspaper report that would name her parents but genealogy is never that simple.
Thanks and best wishes,
Dara.

Lime Hill House, St. Dolough's is marked on the google maps on Griffiths (http://griffiths.askaboutireland.ie/gv4/gv_start.php)
It seems to near the marker of this satellite map : http://www.rootschat.com/links/0700/ (about 300m south east)
The curved feature across the Malahide road seems to have survived and can be seen on the 1850s OS map, and might be useful in working out the current location. I am guessing that both the house and the lane are connected to the production of lime.

Hi Shane,
Many thanks for the map locations. If I’m reading the 1864 map correctly, Lime Hill House is due west of St. Doolagh’s Church. If this is the case, it should be relatively easy to find next time I get to Dublin.
In the link posted above by EC the report states that she was returning home, having delivered dinner to her father when she came upon the scene of the accident. Putting this together with the date in the information you sent me has narrowed down the date of her father’s death from 12 possible matches to only 2, one is an almost perfect match.
Sometimes it’s the smallest details that prove to be the most helpful. Many thanks to both of you for your help so far.
Dara.

I've just sent an e-mail to the Order of St John of Jerusalem to see if they have anything in their archives.
I'll let you know how I get on.

Hi All,
I’ve just got back home from vacation and found a reply to the e-mail I sent before I left.
The silver medal was awarded to Julia by the Order of St John of Jerusalem, better known in Ireland as The Order of Malta or St John’s Ambulance Brigade. Unfortunately, their museum is now closed and their enquiry service suspended. The only access to the records their archivist has is through electronic transcripts.
The medal was awarded on 21 July 1892 and the rescue from the lime kiln happened on 9 October 1890.
Now that I have pinned down the date on which the event occurred, I would be very grateful for any hints on where I should go next.
If anyone has access to newspaper files from October 1890 it would be really helpful if you could steer me in the right direction.
Thanks and best wishes,
Dara.

Dara,
I've looked through the Times Archive for Thursday 9th 1890 (paper was published in the afternoon) Friday and Saturday and could not find anything on the incident.
The only other paper I can think of to check is Freemans journal as I dont believe the Indo was being published until early 1900s

a search by keyword showed nothing connected for either surname (Dignam or Sharkey) for October. I also browsed each page of Thur 9th, Fri 10th and Sat 11th incase an article was unclear - and saw nothing either.
I'll have a quick look at the early part of the next week and see if anything crops up..
