Advice please re: death registers
« on: Saturday 29 August 09 02:28 UTC (UK) »

Hi
I have been trawling through the death indexes in FMP looking for my grandfather David William Thomas born 1879 in Cardiff. I know he lived at West Ella in East Yorks at the time of his death between 1955 and 1960 but I can't find the entry. I understand that West Ella moved from Sculcoates to Haltemprice in 1935 but I haven't even seen that name in the lists.
Can anyone tell me where I should be looking? Also is there somewhere to check the Times obits. without paying extra to Ancestry.co.uk?
Regards
Gwyn

Hi

Halternproce was still in the Sculcoates Registration District until 1937 (see below)

http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/genuki/reg/districts/sculcoates.html

In 1937 Sculcoates became part of the Hull Registration District

The death you are looking for would probably be under Hull although if he died outside the area then it would have been registered wwhere he died

Thanks Andy
I've been right through the index from 1955 to 1960 keeping an eye out for anywhere even within cooee of Haltemprice, Sculcoates ets and I haven't found any entries. I know he lived at West Ella (I went there) and I believe he died at home.
I'll find it eventually

Do you know he definitely died between 1955 and 1960?
I ask because we were looking for a grandfather recently who we'd thought had died between '45 and '47 but actually died in 1942!

Well. My brother remembers receiving the news of Grandpa's death from our landlady and passing it on to my father and we only lived in that flat from August 1956 to late 1959 so I've given myself leeway either side of that in case of faulty memory  Wink

Right. Yes, very wise!
Like I say, it came as a bit of a shock to us that he died earlier than we'd thought as this meant some siblings didn't have the dad they'd thought they had :-O
