Patrick Coyne (1839-1908) - Westmeath
« on: Saturday 29 August 09 16:01 UTC (UK) »

Am researching the family of Patrick Coyne a farmer, born 1839 in Westmeath. His parents were Thomas Coyne (1812-1892) also a farmer and mother Catherine (1809-1882.)

Would like to know of any possible siblings or information about Patrick's parents. We haven't been able to locate a marriage record for them, and assume they were married in Westmeath, possibly Heathstown.

We have a monument inscription which gives the deaths of himself and his family.

Any pointers in the direction I should go would be greatly appreciated.

Not sure if this is of much help, but did a quick search on the Griffth's Valuation.

There is a Thomas and Patrick Coyne listed in the Townland of Knocksimon in the Parish of Killucan, Co. Westmeath.

Good Luck with your searches

Many thanks for taking the time to look that up, I hadn't got round to checking the Griffith's Valuation yet, so it's very helpful.

I know Patrick was married in the Killucan area, so it may well be him and his father Thomas farming in that area.

Thanks again for the help.

Patrick and Margaret (nee Dardis) of Killucan, near Coralstown, County Westmeath were my Great-grandparents.  My Aunt also did a family search back in 1980 but her search also ended with Thomas & Catherine Coyne. As mentioned by Ed H below, she did discover that Thomas was born at Knocksimon, near Coralstown. He bought a house there referred to as 'the house at Chapel Cross'. All of Patrick's & Margaret's seven children were born in that house (my Grand-father included).

Are you related?

Yes, Patrick and Margaret Coyne are my great-grandparents also. Their son Christopher Joseph Coyne (2 June 1892 - 1960) was my grandfather. He moved to London and married there in 1919.

We know that Patrick and Margaret's sons John and Thomas emigrated to Canada. Most of the information we have about the Coyne side came from John Coyne's daughter Phoebe. (we knew her as Patricia Coyne - apparently she changed her name from Phoebe.)(this wouldn't be your aunt would it?)

I remember meeting her when I was quite young, as she came over to visit. My cousin asked her for the information she had researched, but we haven't managed to get back any further as yet.

Yes, I am from the John Joseph branch and Patsy was my aunt.  Did Patsy (or anyone else) send you a copy of the book she made. It did focus on our branch but had a lot of info about Patrick and family. In fact Patrick's wife came to Canada to live with my Grandparents after Patrick died.

I can send a scanned copy but would prefer to connect outside this forum. Any suggestions?
