Gazard, Lewis and Brinkett Horsley/Uley?
« on: Sunday 30 August 09 13:24 UTC (UK) »

 Chatters,

The IGI gives an entry for the marriage of a Thomas GAZARD to a Mary LEWIS on 4 Nov. 1759.  I have verified that submitted entry by searching the marriage records on LDS film 91529.  On the same film is the marriage record of a Thomas Gazard and Ann BRINKETT - Banns called on 2nd, 9th & 16th Dec. followed by marriage on 16 Feb  1765 - the marriage is in the IGI as extracted.

I searched the records of the Horsley Baptist church - LDS film 595441- and  found the record of Mary d.o. Thomas & Mary Gazard b. 17 Nov  1766 plus three of her siblings born between 1760 and 1768, so I am satisfied that there were indeed two Thomas Gazards.

Using the LDS standard guess - man's marriage year minus 25 = birth year - and searching the IGI, gives four submitted entries (q.v.).  Only the Thomas & Mary couple interest me but I wonder why the LDS guessed Uley as well as Horsley?

Please consider the above and let me know what you think was the reason for the Uley guess.  If it's a realistic probability, I'll order the film and search another parish - offering look-ups of course.

Here's hoping

Hi Chas,

Can confirm another  Thos Gazard bach,  Frances Bruton, spin,  on 22 July 1759 in Uley.  Might she have died, and Thos remarried in Horsley in Nov?  Seems quick work, but might explain entries for Uley and Horsley.  If he was otp of Uley when he married Frances and relocated  a mere 4 miles in time to be otp of Horsley  to marry Mary Lewis  04 Nov 1759.   Submitter may have mistakenly used  otp as guide to birthplace for both entries, hence the confusion.  IGI doesn't seem to have any Gazard births for Thos & Frances in Uley.

Could also be mis-transcription of the surname: Phillimores gives Thomas' surname (groom of Mary Lewis) as GAZARS  not Gazard

Did you catch that one of the batch nos where Mary and Thomas appear  is A459122  which is a bit of a mixed bag.  Source:       459122-459126

Gene G,

Thanks a lot for considering my problem. Smiley

The batch A459122 relate to, "Sealings for the dead" - LH click on the batch.  All are  submitted entries from all over the place, so not to be accepted without verification.

Regarding Phillimores giving,"GAZARS", that's an error.  The Banns record gives Gazard three times: for "Calling", "Marriage" and "Marking" - as he could not write his name. Witnesses were Joseph Lewis and Nicolas Gazard.   I've also checked that it is Gazard on the LDS film of the Horsley BT's - film number 425442.  I suppose I could check it on the film I've ordered recently for the second time but there's really no need to do so. Smiley  But thanks for your efforts.

I think one of the factors making the search difficult is that Thomas and Mary's children's birth  recorded (one page per family usually) in the Baptist church records of Shortwood's NC church, shows that Thomas & Mary were Baptists.  It seems I've reached the end of the line for Gazards but if I could only get one of the many Horsley Morses to sort out Lewis . . . . .  Grin

Film number 1482359 gives some Baptist churches but all bar one are later that Horsley's. Cry

Regards and thanks once more.
