Did two sisters marry two/three brothers?
« on: Sunday 30 August 09 15:30 UTC (UK) »

I have a Sarah Allison who was born around 1816 in East Dereham Norfolk and married George Lawrence in 1843 in Westminster, Middlesex.  A witness of their marriage certificate was a Charles Lawrence.  I have now found a Charles Lawrence born around 1815 who married a Elizabeth Allison in 1838 in St George Han. Sq.

First take could this possibly be two sisters who married ?? two brothers but I cannot find any information that has them on the same page so to speak.  George Lawrence died early and Sarah then married a James Lawrence (??again could this possibly be another brother as all three men came from London), however I cannot find how to link them together.

Any ideas

At that time, marrying your deceased husband's brother was unlawful - but that didn't always stop people doing it.

The possible marriage of Sarah and James Lawrence took place in 1857 (March quarter).

In 1861 there is a couple named James and Sarah Lawrence living in Westminster.

James Lawrence head 41                           carman         Westminster
Sarah Lawrence  wife 47                                                East Dereham, Norfolk
William Lawrence  son-in-lawstep* 14                      Westminster

*this is how the original entry appears

Census ref: Class: RG9/ Piece: 50/Folio: 107/Page: 16

So it does look as though  this Sarah was Sarah Lawrence before she married, as William, who is her son but not James' has the surname Lawrence.   She was born in East Dereham, as was Elizabeth Lawrence, wife of Charles in 1851

(census ref: Class: HO107/ Piece: 1479; Folio: 519/ Page: 7)

Charles and Elizabeth Lawrence have a son named Miles Allison Lawrence.

I can't see Sarah and son William Lawrence in 1851 - which might help, but the marriage certificate of Sarah and James Lawrence should tell you their father's names,  whether Sarah was a widow, and her maiden name.

Hi Lottee. I'm sorry, I see that you already have this information:

If you are asking something which follows on from a previous request, it helps if you can post a link to that request, so that information doesn't get duplicated  Smiley

Hi and thank you for initial response
Sorry that I haven't tagged it on to the first topic, but as the question had moved on from my previous one, I didn't think to carry it on.  My previous question had been answered, it was only because I found a recent census entry about a Charles and Elizabeth Lawrence and then noting a Charles Lawrence was a witness to their marriage did it occur to me they could be related so I presumed it became a new topic.

Sarah's first husband was George Lawrence and a cert confirms this.  There are no fathers names or professions entered on George and Sarah's marriage cert which could suggest illigitimacy.  I have sent for Charles and Elizabeth's in the hope there might be some connection either by address, witnesses etc and possibly fathers for both of them.

What I'm hoping to confirm is that they are in fact brothers and sisters.  I have posted a similar question on the Norfolk board (which was probably wrong) as the sisters came from Norfolk and Charles and George from the London area
