Henry Harry Holmes
« on: Monday 31 August 09 14:06 UTC (UK) »

Hi

I was wondering as to whether anybody can help me.

My great grandfather is missing from the 1911 census information.

I have him married in 1908 to a Susan Healey, but by 1911 she is on her own with the children. This was his second marriage, his wife I believe died in child birth. He was my nan's dad - she was Esther Annie Holmes.

I have checked for any deaths - cannot find any record for him from 1908 to 1911.

He was born in about 1874 in Hampshire, married to Lousia Matilda White in 1900, he is on the 1901 census in Wokingham and married Susan Healey in 1908. Missing by 1911.

I wonder whether he left the country. I have found these records, but have no experience of emigration records.

Name                Birth            Departure Date Port etc
HOLMES Harry  Unknown M 1910 Liverpool Canada Montreal
HOLMES Harry  Unknown M 1909 Liverpool USA New York

Could this be him or any other ideas

Thanks

There's no need to start a new thread each time you get more information but if you do need to do so it causes less confusion if you provide a link to previous topic(s) to avoid needless duplication.

What was his occupation and what were his parents' names? This could help track  him in other records (e.g. death records in other countries).
In the 1911 census, does Susan list herself as still married, or as widowed, or other?
Did he have any children with Susan? Who was the youngest and when/where was she or she born?

You can use the "other passengers on the same voyage" function to look at the possibles. e.g. the one who arrived into Canada in 1910 was sailing with a Mary Alice. He may be listed just as H. Holmes or with no first name on the outgoing records.

Hi

His parents were called James Holmes and Esther Dines.

He was orginally a bricklayers labourer, but on my nan's birth certificate he is listed as a agricultural / farm labourer.

He had no children with Susan Healey as far as we know. She is listed as married in the census. She was born in Richmond, Surrey.

Regards
