Nice site, Keith, Well done !

How did you do the charts, was that "hand-made" or did you use a program ??

Hi Paul and Bob,

Thanks for those comments - just had to tell someone!!  Cool

No Bob - not clever enough to do hand made ones like yours - I bought mine as an extra to my software programme - The Master Genealogist - it is called Second Site - but I think it just extracts data from the main programme - don't think it works independently.

I find Second site - the programme thats puts the data onto the internet easy to use but a bit set - needs altering particularly the front page - but as I don't know HTML language I am just copying and pasting bits to see if they work - but it keeps me from nodding off!!  Grin Grin

Cheers

Hi Keith,

my "hand-made" charts are actually excel tables, printed and scanned, which is why I asked.

I like your "try it and see" attitude: "I am just copying and pasting bits to see if they work"

If you get stuck, just ask us !

You'll find you pick up the basics after a while and the rest is is just "trial and error".

One tip though:  make sure you save a copy of any file you are going to try some changes in ....  then you can always copy that file back to your web site, if the changes don't work !

Good luck !

Hi Bob,

Thanks for the offer - I am trying to get the little "googlebots" to pick up on my site - which is why I copied something Hack said about his site - but think I need the "Bateman" name moving to the beginning of the line in the source.

I didn't even know you could use source like that - I use Front Page - see what the source code is for a bit and copy it to my site.

Can't get Front Page to interlock with Second Site - Second Site says about using HTML - so suppose thats the way!!

As you so rightly say I try to keep a copy of the original - for when it all goes wrong!

Trouble is at the moment I am torn between my new site - new relatives, another email received this morning about my lot who it seems went to South Africa - and reading the interesting bits on here!!

Must eat and sleep sometime - don't I??!!  Grin Grin

Cheers

Hi Keith,

I just looked at your site, as source code. I think it might help, to be found,  if you changed this line

<meta name="description" content="I have my Family History back to the 16th century old photos, maps, Victorian prints, valuable genealogical source." >

to include "Bateman"

I (personally) don't like FrontPage. I had to use it at the office to do some work on our firm's web site, and discovered that it added all sorts of unecessary stuff.

I now use a simple text-editor to change things.

Another tip,
presumably you have your web-site locally on your computer and up-load it to rootschat.  Try out any changes locally, by simply dragging the HTML file into your browser.  Then upload when all the changes are correct !

And, last but not least,

Thanks Bob - done that!!

What does the following line do?

<meta name="KeyWords" content=

That is where I put the Bateman bit -  what are the different meta tags for?

Anything for me to worry about or should I "leave well enough alone"

Cheers

Keith... the KEYWORDS met tag is a string of words that you add that will be the key information that search engines use when someone does a search. if one or more of the words are in your met tag, then your site will be listed much sooner in the search results than if you didn't have that tag. That way, your site should generate more hits. It is not uncommon to have 50, 100 or more keywords in the string.

By the way, nice job on your site and congrats on the Canuck Connection.

Cheers, Peter.

Peter, that is what we are always told, but the big problem is, that most search robots DON'T seem to use the keywords tag !!   Sad

So, Keith, you need to put any search terms in the description meta-tag !

Best thing is to put them in both tags, description and keywords, just in case somebody does develop a "keywords-robot" !

Hi

Not sure why, but my mate and I have managed to get a top ten listing for our site on Google - but then who would be likely to so a search on 'nervous nigel' Roll Eyes?

best wishes

The key to a high rating on Google it seems is to keep the webspace up to date, and keep changing it (even if only by a little bit).

There is a standard "error code" for "not changed", so even if you just alter the spacing, add a comma, add a tab, or anything then it will not result in a "not changed" so you have a better chance of staying "up there" on the search engines.
