In researching the very fine www.bayanne.co.uk site for my Shetland roots I came across something new to me. One of my ancestors by the name of Mathewson had a number of children (girls and boys) all with the surname Mathewson. Then out of the blue one girl child has the surname Mathewsdaughter. Logical but not something I have seen before. Does anyone think there is a reason for this quirk or was it just my ancestor's warped sense of humour?.

Their Viking roots, perhaps? In Iceland it's standard practice - a child would be Magnusson or Magnusdottir, depending on sex.

Godden in East Sussex, mainly Hastings area. Richards in Lea, Gloucestershire, then London. Williamson in Leith, Vickers in Nottingham. Webb in Bildeston and Colchester. Wesbroom in Kirby le Soken. Ellington in Harwich. Park, Palmer, Segar and Peartree in Kersey.
That would make eminent sense and links in to the family history. Might even explain why my wife is so fierce.
Lol Nippers!
An interesting fact suttontrust. I never knew that!

With all those stars under your name Sarah I'm sure you are correct. But I've lived in Wales for most of my life and I've yet to meet anybody with the surname "xxxxxsdaughter". Are you referring to names in the Welsh language ?.

Thanks Sarah. I'm with you on this form of Welsh surname. I also note Sutton Trust's reference to Icelandic names. I think in my question Sutton Trust is on the right track. It is just in the English language that "Matthewsdaughter" seems a handful of a surname.
