Robert Comb of Newhaven, North Leith
« on: Tuesday 01 September 09 04:34 UTC (UK) »

Spent a bit of time on Scotlands people trying to pin down Robert Comb who appears to have been born in 1834.

I obtained a copy of his marriage certificate which confirms his father as also being called Robert occupation mariner.

So far I have found Robert Comb wifes name Darney Main, had a son  born Oct 1834 Newhaven.

I then found the birth of Robert Comb born Oct 1835 parents Robert Comb and Margaret Gray.

Looking through the census records for 1841 and 1851 I found Robert Comb and wife Margaret. Amongst the children was a Darnie as well as a Robert.

I haven't been able to find any records of a Robert Comb wife named Darney.

Would I be right in thinking that Robert senior married Darney Main had a child called Robert but they both died and Robert then married Margaret Gray and had another son also called Robert and this is my ancestor?

Occupation of the second Robert junior - apprentice clerk to an agent would fit with my Robert's occupation in Liverpool. He was Book-keeper to a Friendly Society.

You answer lies in the death of Robert Combe aged 76 who died 9th May 1887 Widower of 1st Darnie Main 2nd Margaret Linton (Parents James Combe (Fisherman) and Christian Greig) both deceased.   Senile decay.  Advised by (this will no doubt be your next search - OK born  1856 - died possibly 1898 )  Thos Combe, son, 31 St. Andrews Street, Leith.

I could post lots of more information but the Moderators appear to dislike information from other URLS which in their most learned position take as a breach of copyright.   I remain Akwabaa.

Many thanks for the info, gives me something to look into further during the weekend.

It does look like the 16yr old Robert Comb in 1851 ensus is the chap who left Newhaven and moved to Liverpool. He then married a Margaret Robertson.

For some reason all their children apart from one boy all had a persons surname as middle names. Although none seem to match Main, Liston and Johnston. Perhaps they are from Margarets side.

Although there is a William MacDonald Comb. Wonder if this was a Scottish tradition?

Thanks for the link. Some of the photo's are great. Wonder if any are Combs? Must have been a hard life which is probably why Robert got himself a job away from the sea.

Hello Jean

I have a couple of instances where surnames of friends/colleagues have ended up as middle names of offspring.  Coincidentally (?) in the Leith area.

Hi Hibee
No wonder I haven't found connections.  Undecided

I had been thinking parents, grandparents and so on. Probably because the second born was called Thomas Robertson Comb - mother being Mary Robertson.

Other middle names were McGregor, Young and Smeaton and possibly Scott
