A GUIDE TO BURIALS IN THE LONDON AREA

PART 1

Records of London burials can be extremely difficult to trace. Parish and cemetery burial registers are held in different locations and there is no central index. The National Burial Index for England and Wales (NBI) has very limited coverage of the London area with only 5 registers in Middlesex covered (nothing before 1813) and 15,000 entries. There is no coverage of any registers within metropolitan Surrey.

There is an index (1813-1853) to burials in the churches situated in the square mile of the City of London, which can be obtained from WEST SURREY FAMILY HISTORY SOCIETYhttp://tinyurl.com/mruffu

You can also access the index on two subscription/pay as you go websites

FINDMYPASThttp://tinyurl.com/mhn364

BRITISH ORIGINShttp://tinyurl.com/mbrq3z

British Origins also has access to the Boyd’s London burial index, of mainly adult males (1538-1872), which was compiled in 1934 (but has only 243,000 entries) and St Leonard Shoreditch burials (1813-1853).

Before the 1840s most people were buried in Anglican churchyards, though some non-conformist churches had their own burial grounds.
The National Archives holds many non-conformist church registers largely pre 1837 (in series RG4, RG6, and RG8), and these registers are now being placed online at BMD REGISTERShttp://tinyurl.com/nxokv9

From the 1840s onward searching for London burials becomes much more complex, with most burials taking place in large non-denominational private or civic cemeteries, the records for which are held usually by London boroughs themselves or if privately owned by the individual cemeteries. Some copies of registers will be held in local archives. There are few online indexes.

The first public cemetery established in London was in 1833 and was 72 acres in size. By 1841 there were six more of these large cemeteries in the London area. By the 1840s London churchyards were so overcrowded that they were considered a growing health risk and were increasingly closed to new burials e.g. ‘St Martin-in-the-Fields churchyard was only 200 feet (60 metres) square yet by the early 1840's, it was estimated to contain the remains of between sixty and seventy thousand persons'. The sheer numbers of Londoners buried either in churchyards or cemeteries makes searching for a burial without a rough date of death and knowledge of which church or cemetery register to search very difficult. THE LONDON DIGITALISATION PROGRAMME which aims to index parish registers will help enormously in finding burials in church registers, but not unfortunately with cemetery registers. It will not include the Westminster parishes:  http://tinyurl.com/57psxs

Information about London church burials by geographic region and parish is given at this website THE LONDON BURIAL GROUNDS which has further notes and photographs:  http://tinyurl.com/lrtkdt

Information about London Jewish Cemeteries can be found here at THE INTERNATIONAL JEWISH CEMETERY PROJECThttp://tinyurl.com/mw4ooy

In a large metropolis like London people were not always buried in their ‘local’ cemetery, and there were often ‘arrangements’ between specific burial grounds to bury those from certain geographical areas.  There were also similar arrangements between certain London parishes/hospitals/workhouses/societies and cemeteries – as an example see BROOKWOOD CEMETERY IN WOKING SURREYhttp://tinyurl.com/ladef2

Many London churchyards and burial grounds have been destroyed either through redevelopment or bombing during World War Two. Some older London cemeteries have been neglected and the gravestones have been degraded by pollution and general age. Part of Nunhead cemetery for instance is now a nature reserve see this article at BBC LONDONhttp://tinyurl.com/cdke93

Burial was an expensive process and most Londoners could not afford the expense of a cemetery plot, let alone a gravestone. Many Londoners were buried in common graves which contained other burials. Burial in a common grave was not synonymous with a pauper funeral. It did not mean the funeral itself was not paid for by the family.

Cemetery registers usually give the name of the deceased, age, abode and occupation, the date of death and of burial, and the position of the grave. These records are arranged chronologically, and are not indexed alphabetically, though some cemeteries may have some computerised indexes. If a private grave was purchased those records will indicate who purchased the plot, their address and when it was purchased and whether a gravestone was erected (though not whether it survives). The records will also indicate who else was buried in the plot, when and at what depths.

A GUIDE TO BURIALS IN THE LONDON AREA

PART 2

The following is a list of cemeteries divided into four geographical areas of Greater London giving the London boroughs and cemeteries within each quartile. The square mile of the City of London is given separately.

CITY OF LONDON
NORTH-WEST LONDON
NORTH-EAST LONDON
SOUTH-EAST LONDON
SOUTH WEST LONDON

A useful map of the London boroughs to help further geographically place each London borough is at THE CITY OF LONDON website:  http://tinyurl.com/r73p8

The BRITISH TOWNS AND VILLAGES NETWORK website is very useful in helping to geographically navigate a modern day map of Greater London, showing each London borough council and the individual places within it: http://tinyurl.com/m5yhga

The borough of Spelthorne is in the county of Surrey bordering onto Greater London. This is a useful map of Surrey’s districts and borough councils at SURREY COUNTY COUNCIL website:  http://tinyurl.com/yeoh26

The date of opening of each cemetery is given with a website contact where it can be found. Cemeteries may not be physically within the London borough which administers them.

It is worth contacting the local archives within each area as they may hold copies of the burial registers for some cemeteries which you can search yourself web addresses at LONDON LIBRARIES ARCHIVES AND LOCAL STUDIES COLLECTIONShttp://tinyurl.com/m2qs6n

The Church of Latter Day Saints – LDS - (also known as Mormons) has many family history centres around the country. You can order and use their microfilms for a small charge. This is a list of their UK centres:  http://tinyurl.com/mtrsf2

It is worth checking their catalogue to see which cemetery registers they hold on microfilm:  http://tinyurl.com/mt2auu

There is an embryonic pay as you view database called ‘DECEASED ONLINE ' which so far a few London boroughs (Brent, Camden and Islington and Havering) have contributed to:  http://tinyurl.com/lwcqyf
