1871 census

Hi - my gt grandfather was serving in the British army and was stationed in Dundalk in 1871.  Would the British army have had a census done as part of the UK census?

there was a census carried out here in 1871, but it was destroyed. The surviving Irish census returns (1911 and 1901) are being digitized and placed on line on the National Archives website : http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/  (1911 is currently available, 1901 due by early 2010)
