A long time ago, possibly in Markfield
« on: Tuesday 01 September 09 13:56 UTC (UK) »

I have a will dated 1779 made by a Henry Upton, FWK of Markfield.

In it he names his children (all adult, most married with children) as John, Thomas, William, Mary and Elizabeth - IGI gives Markfield baptisms for Mary (1722), Thomas (1724), and Elizabeth (1725), to Henry and Elizabeth. Henry also had another daughter Elizabeth (1716-1718) and a son, Henry.

In 1745, in Desford, Mary Clamp married John Upton, "of Markfield". It seems reasonable to assume that this was Henry's son.

John died in 1811 and his age at death was given as 102 but of course that might not be accurate!

I can't find John's birth (or William's) or the marraige of Henry and Elizabeth in the Markfield PR's. Of course H and E might have married elsewhere; John might have been a son from a previous marraige.

It's a long time ago and I'm not particularly hopeful of being able to get further back with this line but can anyone suggest anything more, or does anyone have any other parish info showing these people?

Thanks Smiley

Thankyou, that would be great  Smiley

There were Uptons in the late 1600s in Long Whatton, I think that's covered by Loughborough though I may be wrong.

Thanks - no rush, I'm away next week myself.

The vicar (?rector? I don't know these church terms!) of Long Whatton in the early 1600's, or maybe earlier, was Henry Upton -sorry, I know that's vague! I don't know anything of his family though.
