Hi Jean
I wonder if you can find the marriages of
1. Jeremy Pemberton to a Hannah ? about 1767. If so does it show their ages and are there any witnesses named?
2. Samuel Pemberton to a Hannah ? about 1808. If so, as above, does it show their ages and any witnesses?
Jeremy might have married in or near to Lower Peover, but I don't know where Samuel married. He was born in Lower Peover and his supposed wife was born in Newton. Someone told me they married in Warrington. Neither facts make much sense as Newton is near Chester and a good 25 miles from both Lower Peover and Warrington. I can understand a man marrying in his bride's parish, but I have no idea why they would marry in a parish that is not near to either of their homes. The couple appear to have lived in Northwich after their marriage.
Many thanks Lizzie

I wonder if you have considered that Samuel's wife may have hailed from another Newton in Cheshire - the one near Chester isn't the only one, there are several others. Possibly she might have been born in Newton by Daresbury which was much nearer to Warrington. Just a thought ...................

Yes, Samuel's wife could have come from Newton by Daresbury. I suppose part of the problem is that although Warrington is in Cheshire now, it used to be in Lancashire until 1974, so any marriages in the Warrington area, won't be on any Cheshire records.

Hi Lizzie,
Matches with the index I have:
Jeremy PEMBERTON m Hannah BURROWS 18 Oct 1767 Lower Peover St Oswald
I can't verify the 1808 marriage that Celia has posted, the index only covers Cheshire - it's from the IGI and extracted from the parish register so seems a likely candidate.

Jen and Celia
Many thanks to you both. I didn't see the marriages on IGI, musn't have been looking properly. Certainly I can't find their births, or the births of Samuel's siblings. I don't think I would have accepted a submitted marriage but as Jean has confirmed it from her index that's good.
Celia - I have no idea whether they were Catholics, although I don't think so. Alice Pemberton, my 2 x g.grandmother, who was a granddaughter of Samuel married at The Cathedral Parish Church Manchester - I have her marriage cert as she married in 1871. Also, I assume that St Oswald Church where Jeremy married was C of E.
Jean - If you've got time, can you see which church Peter Pemberton (son of Samuel) married his wife Elizabeth (Betty) Woodward on 27 December 1832. I've been led to believe the marriage was in Frodsham.
Many thanks again.
