Marriage John and Elizabeth Morey
« on: Tuesday 01 September 09 18:48 UTC (UK) »

I would welcome help with a brick wall. My wife is descended from Jane Morey, daughter of John and Elizabeth Morey. Their ages are 30 in the 1841 census (spelling Moorey), they live in Warblington, and their birthplace is Hampshire; in 1851 this is specified as Emsworth, and they are living in Havant. In 1861 Elizabeth is a widow (name of whole family transcribed as 'Marry'), and her birthplace is given as Fishbourne, Sussex. Having failed to find a marriage of John Morey and Elizabeth ? in Hampshire, I have found 2 in Sussex:

John Morey/Elizabeth Potter, 14 May 1827,St Peter the Great, Chichester
John Morey/Elizabeth Morgan, 8 Sept 1828, Bosham, Sussex

I would welcome help with deciding which (if either) is likely to be the couple I am trying to trace, or suggestions as to how best to establish a link; we live in Sheffield, and are unlikely to be able to visit archives in Sussex
Many thanks

Extra information from the SMI.

The Chichester marriage.  Both OTP; after banns.

The Bosham marriage.  John bachelor of Warblington, Hants; Elizabeth OTP; after banns.

Fishbourne is near Bosham and, to me, this looks the more likely of the two.

To confirm the mother's maiden name, I would suggest that you get a certificate of one of their children born after 1837.

Thanks for your helpful replies. I have a question and a comment, both resulting from my inexperience/stupidity:
1. What is SMI, and is it available on-line?
2. The comment on birth certificates is just what I needed. I have thus far done virtually everything on-line, and had forgotten that the mother's maiden name is normally included on the birth certificate. So that is my next step. Moral: when answering  queries,  please don't be afraid to state what is (to you) obvious - some of us need such tips!
Many thanks

What is SMI

This is the Sussex Marriage Index, available on CD and postal enquiries from Sussex Family History Group:

http://www.sfhg.org.uk/marriageindex.html

Not available online that I know of.  Some of its included sources are Sussex Record Collections volumes of marriage licence bonds/allegations and the books may be found in local reference libraries, Society of Genealogists, and some of them may have been scanned and published as archive books CDs.

Another source for such material is something rather like Google books:

http://www.archive.org/index.php

Texts can be viewed/downloaded. Beware - they can be large files!
