The Pratt/Knight parentage produce only one entry in the IGI.
MARGARET PRATT 16 DEC 1818 South Leith, Midlothian, Scotland
However Scotlandspeople have another:
Hugh Pratt 23/03/1828.
A quick look at FREECEN and with the usual caution about copyright there in 1841
Lawries Close South Leith
PRATT Margt. F 38 Works Out PRATT James M 13 PRATT Hugh M 12 PRATT Dugald M 6 PRATT Helen F 4

Not yet. Want to find out if he really was the son of John/James Pratt and Ann Donaldson. I would also like to find what happened to Margaret Pratt the daughter of James Pratt and Margaret Knight who was born 1818 in South Leith. All the family moved to Fleetwood in Lancashire between 1841 and 1851 being mariners and seamen they worked at Firemen on board the new steam/sail packet ships of the time which sailed from the port to various places. Its the links to Leith that I want to investigate further having visited for a day last year when on a trip to see the Royal Yacht. Not a lot left to see of the original town as it is all being re-developed. I had never really known about its close proximity to the City of Edinburgh either but know that life must have been particularly hard there in the early 1800's and that the stench in the streets was particularly offensive. Unfortunately, the Scottish BMD does not list all the children born just one or two so the others are taken solely from the later Census. I believe Ann Donaldson was from the Tranent Parish of Edinburgh but not sure where John/James was born. I'm hoping that the family have always been in the Leith/Edinburgh area as there are countless Pratt families throughout the rest of Scotland........ Regards Sandra

Hi Hibee,do you have an approx. year of birth for James snr. What makes you think that he may be the son of John/James and Ann?
The IGI has - James Pratt ch 11 May 1792, North Leith, Father- John Pratt, Mother-Helen Clark.
also
Margaret Knight ch 13 Feb 1803,South Leith, Father-John Knight, Mother-Barbra Hardie. Margaret's age is right for the 1841 census.

I have James birthyear 1792 from the 1861 Census in Fleetwood. Looked him up in the Scottish BMD and came up with Birth on the 22 Nov 1794 Tranent, Edinburgh. Had not seen the 1872 entry which sounds to be correct. Many thanks for finding this for me. I now need to go back further and find Johns family. As soon as I've saved some money I will invest in some more credit with the Scottish BMD. It goes far too quickly once you are on a roll..... As far as Margaret Knight is concerned. Their Marriage gives her fathers name as Hugh Knight not John and he was married to a Margaret Smith. Your help is very much appreciated. It's so very frustrating not to be able to look something up easily. Do you know if Parish Registers are available for Leith in CD or Book Form? Kind Regards Sandra

Thanks Val
It gets really difficult from here on as there are so many James Donaldsons and Ann Donaldsons born in Scotland at around that time. I'm still hoping that everything links back to Fife but, if I can keep the Pratts in the Leith area back to their beginnings, I would be overjoyed. Have had a look on the IGI for John Pratt around 1760 but none found in Leith. The only one on there which stands out is for Kettle, Fife 1754 and, as you may have read in an earlier post, I'm hoping my John Pratt is related to the David Pratt from Fife who married in Leith. Ah well, will just keep plodding on...... Best Wishes Sandra
