« on: Tuesday 01 September 09 21:20 UTC (UK) »

Can anyone tell me if Kirby Stephen comes under "East Ward" in the 1911 census

As the name I am searching for does not seem to come up under Kirby Stephen

Hi Brian

Are you using the standard or advanced search?

The standard search looks for exact matches, so may not find what you want.

Go into Advanced search and you have various options that might help you find it.

Or you could give us the name and any other info and we'll see what we can find in the (free) indexes   Cheesy

I had a look at Yare in Kirkby and found all the East Ward entries - I suspect they are connected to yours but unless you pay for your credits to see the original images, you can't know for certain. Do you know when they had the shop and have you tried old trade directories?

According to my copy of "Kirkby Stephen at Work 1780 - 1905- a Historic Directory"
Yare entries:
Ann was a shopkeeper in Brough in 1794.  It does not say what sort of shop.
Frank a  tailor Mount Ida View 1905
James and George were blacksmiths in 1869 and 84,
Thomas was a blacksmith in 1873
Joseph Jnr Wheelwright  & Joiner Brough 1829, 51, 58, 73
James joiner Brough 1849, 51
John Elliot Yare joiner High St 1905
Jane a baker Brough 1849, 51
Joseph a baker Brough 1829
Joseph bicycle dealer North End 1897
John boot and shoe maker Brough 1829, 51
John boot and shoe maker Main St 1897
William boot and shoemaker Brough 1858, 73, 85
and Main Street and High Street Brough 1905
William clogger and patten maker Market St 1905
William a farmer Brough 1885
John a farmer Brough 1885
Mrs Margaret Yare a draper Main St Brough 1905
Mary a milliner Brough 1849, 51
Thomas a locksmith 1873
James innkeeper Shoulder of Mutton Brough 1849, 51, 58
William school teacher Brough 1794
Joseph jnr timber merchant Brough 1829, 51, 58, 73
Joseph a carrier Brough 1794

I assume a lot of these are the same person doubling up on lots of trades.
Andrea

That's a pretty comprehensive list!

And there are boot and shoe makers in there so it's looking good for Brian's Yares.

Thanks everyone, I have 1911 credits but wanted to narrow the field down, as I had already found that there were lots of "Yare's" and could not work out which were in the shoe trade. Hopefully I will find what I want from Andrea's very comprehensive list

Thanks again
