I'm looking for info on John Brown who married Isabella Waters in 1853 South Leith, Midlothian. My research has shown that John was also known as David Brown. On the marriage certificate he's John Brown but on the birth certificate of his son John (1854) he's known as David, however he's known as John Brown on the birth certificates of his second son Alexander (1855) and daughter Isabella (1858). In addition, the name John is amended to David on the death certificate of his son John (born 1854). I've been unable to find a birth certificate for John/David Brown, probably born c.1828. According to the birth certificate of his son Alexander (1855) it states that the father John Brown was born in Balerno, but I've not been able to trace any John/David Browns in Balerno/Currie. John/David was a merchant seaman, according to the death certificate of Isabella Waters (1880, South Leith). If any one can shed any light on the origins of John/David Brown, please get in touch. Many thanks, David.

Many thanks Hibee for taking the time to reply. Two great minds think alike! I've considered that I might be looking at two families, however, I've found a couple of census records that I believe belong to the correct Browns. I still need to confirm the names on the censuses with birth/death records, but I think I'm on the right track, finally.
Thanks again, David.

I've managed to locate Browns living in Balerno, Currie on the 1841 census, John Brown missing though, thought this could be them, but not able to confirm without the birth/death record for John Brown born c. 1827, will keep searching. David.
