Hi,
I am looking for any information on William Howells. All I know is that he was born c1876 Cefn Coed, married Mary, joined 3rd Welsh regiment.
Died as a result of the war, buried Caerphilly 1918.
Address at time of death 19 Grove Terrace, Sengenydd.
Was he injured in Europe and died after being sent home? We don't know.
No death cert has yet been found.
Annie May Howells, died age 7, is buried in the same grave.
Any information gratefully received.

Have you already discounted the entry on the CWGC website - died 28.9.1918 aged 45 buried CAERPHILLY (PENYRHEOL) CEMETERY

Thanks. That seems to be him, though we were told he was 43.
I have found a possible census entry, born 1876, which would make him 42 or 43. Will have to check the census again.

Are you going by the 1881 entry you found when you say his birthplace was Cefn Coed or do you have some independant source that confirms his birthyear/birthplace?
It appears his widow had re-married by the time of the memorial as she is shown as Mary Turner formerly Howells.
Does this confirm any info you have so you would then know it was the right CWGC entry
The entry gives his Service number etc so you could always use that info to try to trace his background

His grandson gave me the Cefn Coed reference, and also that his wife was Mary, so it is almost certainly the right person.
There is a page at ancestry (UK soldiers died in WWI) which gives the same service number, and a new place to search the census. It looks like he was living in Llanelli when he joined the army - we didn't know that.
He was buried from Sengenydd, for whatever reason (parents address, maybe)

Family says that Mary's second marriage was to Taverner, not Turner. Must be a transcription error in the records.

What we really need now is William's death certificate, but we can't find the record, even though we know where and when he was buried!

The only one on either the GRO index or freebmd is aged 47 Bedwelty so wrong age and wrong county
