Names which might be read as BUDAY? 1851. Husband of Elizabeth Hawkins COMPLETE
« on: Thursday 03 September 09 01:03 UTC (UK) »

Tracing my gggrandfather Jeremiah Hawkins, in 1851 census he was living with his brother-in-law John 'Buday' (born about 1821 in Taynton Glos), in Redmarley. (Jeremiah was spelled as Jermia on the census image!)  Huh

I can find no references to a Buday family in Glos or Worcs in 1841, or subsequent to 1851, nor can I find anything on the Forest of Dean site.

I have tried some possibles (Bewdy, Boddy, Priday - I forget any others), also looked for records of the children's births - Mary Ann abt 1844, Samuel(l) abt 1849 and Emma abt 1850 all born Redmarley, and George abt 1847 born Newent. Total failure for all  Sad

While this is not vital to tracing the direct line, I am determined not to let it beat me.

Any suggestions?

Hi halhawk  Smiley

In the 1871 transcription for Redmarley, on the GENUKI website, they appear as PRIDAY:

http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/GLS/RedmarleydAbitot/Census71-1.html

I checked the original for 1871 and it does appear to say PRIDAY  Smiley

Hal,

If you go to http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~hughwallis/IGIBatchNumbers/CountyGloucester_(N-Z).htm#T you'll find what the LDS give as entries of baptisms extracted from the parish records of Taynton up to the year 1858.

Their interpretation might help I suppose.

Regards

Chas

P.S.

"PREEDY" is the favourite it seems but the only way to be more sure of the family name is to check the church records at an LDS FHC.  LDS film number 91541.  Census enumerators write down what they think they hear which may not be what was spoken Cheesy

Wow!  Thanks for the help everyone.

I've found a John Priday, with wife Elizabeth, still living in Redmarley, on the 1871 and 1881 censuses, so it looks like the right name.

Still have to search the 1861 census, because I can't see him as Priday, but at last I have some more ideas.  I'll also try the websites you referenced.

Once again thanks to all  Smiley

Thanks alli!
I obviously hadn't looked far enough on Ancestry to find that variation!  The spelling on some of the records and sometimes the transcriptions is fun, isn't it?

Now to have a good time expanding my family tree and tracing more lines  Cheesy

All the best

On the 1851 census CD index for Gloucestershire the name has been transcribed as Priday.

Looking at the image it's written as Priday but easy to see why Ancestry has transcribed as Buday!
