Hat makers/drapers in Grantham early 1800's
« on: Thursday 03 September 09 15:38 UTC (UK) »

Hi,
I am trying to find Paul Wilson b.c. 1750 (possibly a hat maker) and his son, also Paul b.1792 ( a draper)  in Grantham circa 1800.Does anyone have access to any Grantham Trade Directories which could help, please?
Many thanks
Pauline

Absolutely brilliant - thank you so much. Planning to visit Grantham in near future and will give Vine Street a visit.
Much obliged,
Pauline

Hi Pauline,

Vine Street buildings on the right of the picture that Geoff put up for you is still the same today as it was in the 1800s it is just round the corner from the Angel and Royal hotel. The left hand side on the picture is all that is left of the original Vine Street. The big house on the left is a doctors surgery.
There was originally a row of shops next to the surgery but were sadly pulled down to allow Watergate to be widened.
By the way if you have not been to Grantham yet there is a lovely cafe in Vine Street just as you enter the street near the Angel called Barkers where you can get a snack or a hot meal very reasonably priced and the inside has all the original oakbeams in the ceiling and you get a lovely view of the buildings on the opposite side from the window.
I did try to find the number of the shop that Paul Wilson owned when in Grantham library but could not find it.

Kathy,
Many many thanks for the information and the time and trouble you went to. Coincidentally, we are off to Grantham tomorrow to have a look in the museum, St. Wolframs Church and the local studies library.

Best Regards

Hi Pauline

Enjoy your visit to Grantham.  St Wulframs Church is at the end of Vine street just round the corner to the left of the Blue Pig pub.
