Louisa Conquest, b.1842, to Canada 1908
« on: Thursday 03 September 09 17:25 UTC (UK) »

Hi,
I've just discovered that my gt. grandmother Louisa Conquest, born 1842, Kempston, Bedfordshire, went to Canada, arriving in Montreal on 12 June 1908. I have found her on the 1911 Canada census, living with son Henry James, born 1875, Lambeth, and Katharine, born 1883, Camberwell.

She must have come back to England some time after 1911 census, as I have found her arriving back in Montreal on 19 October 1912.

Is there any way of finding out when she died, and also what might have happened to Henry and Katharine?  In 1911 they were both single, Louisa a widow (her husband William died in December 1908).

Thanks, Ann

 - you can try and trace them through Montreal city directories.

Jorose,
Thank you for that link, what a great directory.  I think I've found Henry as a painter decorator in it.  Still wish I could find out about gt grandmother Louisa, but that's obviously more difficult.

There was a great resource for tracking people in Quebec - the Drouin records.  Unfortunately they are no longer available via ancestry - a legal dispute over rights to the records.  Perhaps that will be resolved in the near future and they will be back online.

I know I have come across a pay site that also has some of these records indexed and available but have not been able to find it again.  Will keep trying.

Mount Royal is a large cemetery in Montreal.  You can use their free service to find if Louisa is buried there.

Hi Debbie,
Thanks for your help - I have just used the link to Mount Royal, but unfortunately their free seachable database has been removed due to technical problems.  What a shame - wonder if its the same difficulty you mention about the other records.

Hello Ann,

I know the Droun records are in limbo with ancestry right now since I am working on tracing 2 g-uncles born near Quebec City :-( However, you may want to connect with the Montreal Library systems to see if they have access to Drouin dox and other records that would help you along. This could be the public or one of the university or college systems. Another avenue to go may be the local family history society. Here is one link http://www.qfhs.ca/. Ontario as well as British Columbia have cenmetery transcription sites, but i don't know if Quebec does. You may want to google for that. Anyway, hope that helps,

Hello,
Read on this board today that the Drouin records are now on Ancestry - so I had a look, and am delighted to say that I have found Louisa's death and burial - how great is that! She lived to a good age, 85, died 5 November 1927.
Thanks for all help, Ann
