Martha Watson/Mary Bean
« on: Thursday 03 September 09 17:39 UTC (UK) »

Hi

I am trying to track down where 2 relatives are buried.  I have been looking for Martha Watson (nee Bean)who was born in 1890 and died 1915 (I think) she is listed as passing away in Driffield.  I have  checked the churchyard but cant find her would it be usual for the family to bury her back in Riston way where they were originally from? If not how would i go about finding where she is actually buried.

I also have the same problem with her mother Mary Ann Bean (as yet i dont know her maiden name b 1864 at Flinton)who is sometimes listed as Martha Ann Bean, she is not buried with her husband John Bean in Skerne and i dont know why not, would it again be possible they buried her with her daughter Martha as her daughters husband died in 1917 in Flanders so no body was ever returned home.

Thanks For any Help

Hello Vicki

I had rellies that died where they lived but were taken back to where they were born to be buried.

Maybe she doesnt have a headstone or it has been taken away because of been broken etc.

There is a John Bean that married a Mary Ann Codling in 1888 at St Marks, Hull

Best Wishes

Hello Vicki
To try and trace details of burials try the Treasure House at Beverley to see if they have any Transcriptions of churchyards / graveyards for the areas you are looking in. Broaden your search outwards from these areas.  Driffield library might have copies of the same for all the local areas and some smaller libraries might also have copies of same. Also try and contact the relevant Burial Departments for the graveyards to see if they have any burial information they can give you.

Not sure when cremations started, as different areas started at different times offering this alternative.
Again the Treasure House will be able to help with some information regarding cremations.

It was "normal" for the dead to be taken back to their area of origin for burial.

Also check for "common graves" or "communal graves" or "paupers graves". If families did not have the money to pay for burial then they might have received this type of burial.

Have you obtained the death certificates as this will give cause of death. Death following some types of infectious illnesses meant these burials were held in specific graveyards.

Good luck in your searches.
