Could some kind soul help me with a look-up in the parish records for St. John's, Islington, please? I'm looking for a 12/04/1922 marriage between Susan/Susanna McElroy and a William Eridge Morrison, at St. John's in Islington. I think this is a Catholic church, as my McElroys are/were Irish catholics. I'm not sure if the date refers to 12th April 1922 or possibly 4th December 1922 (under the American notation). Also, I don't know if Eridge is a middle name or the first part of a double-barreled last name. I've tried searching the National Archive registration of marriages, and internet searches, etc., but have not been able to find anything. I'd be very grateful if some could look up the parish register for that day. Thanks. John

Hi
The first thing to know for a marriage to have taken place it would have to have been registered. For all marriages taking place in a church that was not Anglican (Church of England) the local registrar had to be present to register the marriage to make it legal under English law at that the time.
There is nothing in the General Registry Office index for this marriage in 1922 (any date in that year) in Islington registration district. in fact not McElroy/Morrison marriage at all.
The local registry office details are here in case you want to enquire with them.
http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/genuki/reg/districts/index.html
The second thing to know is that Catholic churches rarely deposit their registers in local county archives.
This is a guide to Catholic registers

This is the website of St John the Evangelist RC church Islington.

There doesn't seem to be a birth registration for a Susan/nah McElroy (or anyone showing on the censuses unless she was elderly when she married) or anyone with a middle name of Edridge/Eridge and a surname Morrison, or a double barrelled version.
The 1911 census does have a 10 year old Susan McElroy in Durham. That's about 250 miles away from Islington.
Regards
Valda

Thanks. The Susan McElroy, born 1900 in Latedrum (actually Leitrim, Drumgooland, County Down), in the 1911 census is the one I'm trying to find a marriage for. A birth record I got from the Ulster History Foundation database has a comment about a 12/04/1922 marriage at st. John's in Islington to William Eridge Morrison, but no source/reference. The family moved to Islington some time after 1911, and I've managed to find the record of the marriage of Susan/Susanna's sister, Margaret to Marcel Joseph Paquier in Islington in Oct-Nov-Dec 1922, but not the one I want. Maybe the church can help out, if their records are not transcribed somewhere else. Best wishes, John

I have subsequently discovered that he spelling of the man's (middle and last) name was wrong. It should have been William Erridge Morison.
I have since managed to find the parish register, which shows that they had a Catholic ceremony on 12th April 1922, but this was to consecrate a civil ceremony performed the previous year in April 1921 (don't know where, though).
I cannot, however, find any record of their civil marriage. There was an April 1921 marriage in Islington, of a William MORISON, but it's to an Irene ANTLEY. The only Irene Antley I can find in Ancestry.com is one born in Lancashire in 1910; she'd have been too young to get married aged 12. There is no Irene ANTLEY in the 1911 census. Curious and curiouser ...

Thanks, Dawn, but neither Islington Register Office, the UK General record Office, nor I can find any trace of this previous civil marriage. I have also searched GenesReunited, Ancestry, FindMyPast and the internet, but can't find anything. Maybe they got married outside Great Britain, but they were only about 27 and 22, and they did get the civil marriage consecrated in Islington. Cheers, John
