Sutton Coldfield burial 1951
« on: Friday 04 September 09 09:05 UTC (UK) »

I'm trying to track down the burial of my grandfather Harold Heward CLARKE. He died on 24 Oct 1951 in Streetly.

Walsall have no record of of a cremation or burial, nor does Birmingham. So I guess that basically leaves a church burial.

At the time my parents had been living in Sutton Coldfield for some time, but my grandparents had only just moved to the area, so my guess is that HHC was buried in Sutton Coldfield.

My question is, which churches were conducting burials in 1951, and does anyone have access to the relevant PRs to do a lookup for me?

Andy,

If you go to the Birmingham city council website, they have a cemeteries link on the website listing all the cemeteries.

I found my Grandfathers death details online, and then emailed the Rectory Road cemetery in the Sutton Coldfield asking for help, (as this was close to the hospital in which he passed away), with his details, i.e, name, DOD, DOB.

A lady then emailed back, and gave me the details of where he was buried within the cemetery for free, as I explained I wanted to visit to pay my respects.

I think they only charge, if you are purely searching for the information to file away, if you intend to visit they are usually willing to help.

Hi Angi,

I've already been down that route, Birmingham don't have any record of a burial for my grandfather, they told me that they only have records for burials at council cemeteries, not churchyards.

Andy,

Sorry!  Maybe try contacting the churches directly.

Do you know where he passed away in Sutton Coldfield?  There is this church: www.htsc.org.uk

I was hoping someone knew which churchyards were open for burials in 1951. Holy Trinity is the 'main' parish church for Sutton Coldfield, I've already been there but they tell me that the churchyard has been closed for burials since 1930.

He died in Streetly, but as he hadn't been living there very long, and my parents lived in Sutton Coldfield, I thought Sutton would be a better bet.

I've already tried Streetly crematorium and cemetery.

Another possibility is that there was a death notice or obituary in one of the Birmingham papers,  does anyone know which, if any, carried such notices? I've already checked the Sutton Coldfield News without success.

[later] It's occurred to me that, as my grandparents had only recently moved to the area, it's just possible that the burial took place in their old home town of Oxshott, Surrey... I'll try asking on the Surrey board as well.

St Michaels Boldmere is another church if he was Anglican my Grandparents are buried there Nana died in 1979 so it was in use then, if my memory serves me correctly and I now live in NZ, this would not come under Birmingham but Warwick for registration.
