The elusive George and Louisa Biddlecombe
« on: Friday 04 September 09 11:02 UTC (UK) »

This is a quest I pursued some months ago, leading to this thread, http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,365663.0.html, but despite many peoples help, I really made no progress on locating George and Louisa's whereabouts after 1873.

This is what I've got on Louisa Biddlecombe (née Packer):

Born Middlesex 1838 to John packer and Elizabeth Lewis in Marylebone.

1841 census - Living in Southwark: John 35, Elizabeth 30, John 14, Matthew 12, Charles 10, Louisa 3, and Sophia 11 months.

1851, she is living at 15 Brunswick Grove, St Pancras. By this stage, her mother, Elizabeth has died and Sarah Humphries (described as daughter in law and housekeeper) has moved in with her son, James. The household are: John 46, described as widow and master basketmaker, Louisa 19 (she’s actually 13) house servant, Sophia 11, Ann 4, Sarah Humphries 26 and her son, James 5.

In 1860 louisa marries miner George Biddlecombe who hails from Blackburn, Lancashire. (this is mistranscribed - he probably came from Blackwater in Hampshire). They marry at Holborn.

In 1861 Louisa 23 and George Biddlecombe  24 are living at 1 Brill Crescent, St Pancras. He is listed as a miner, she, a basket maker.

In 1873, she is a witness at her nephew’s ‘Thomas John Packers’ marriage to ‘Margaret O’ Shaughnessy’. He is her brother Matthew’s son. I have a copy of the cert.

After 1873, I can find neither hide nor hair of Louisa or George. Did they emigrate?

Also, what is a miner doing in St Pancras? Was he merely a navvy on the 'Metropolitan line'?

Hi

There is this Louisa Biddlecombe death registration which doesn't seem to fit with any census information except the 1861 census for your Louisa.

Deaths Mar 1899 BIDDLECOMBE  Louisa  63  Bethnal Green  1c 181

Hi Dan, have you got parents for John Packer? It is the right area for my Packer tribe and many of the fore names are common to my lot. If they are linked they should come from Reading ,St Lawrence. Cheers Pete

Sorry I've taken so Long to reply. I've just seen your post.

Most of my Packers are from London and Kent.
