Hi,
The Eldest Child on the 1871 is Louisa Clayton b C1857 so presumably the marriage would be prior to that..according to the 1871 census Louisa was born in Woolwich Kent which was the Greenwich registration District.
Births Jun Qtr 1858 Louisa Clayton Greenwich 1d 525
So maybe this was the Marriage.
Marriages Jun Qtr 1855 Frederick Clayton Greenwich 1d 770 Margaret Lawrie

Well if you think it could be the possible marriage you could order the Marriage Certificate and it will show his Fathers name and they may be living together (possibly mother too) on an earlier census and from that you may be able to go further back.

Looking at the image, she is down as Margaret Hanney. There is a Do after her name to ditto the surname from above, but looks quite clearly to me to have been crossed out.

The mother in law in 1871 is Margaret HANNEY. The do (ditto) after her name is quite clearly crossed out on the image.
1851 census 59 Warwick St, Woolwich John HANNEY, head mar 54, Carpenter, born Limerick Ireland Margaret HANNEY, wife mar 44, born ditto Margaret HANNEY, dau unm 19, Laundress, born ditto Ellen HANNEY, dau 9, Scholar, born ditto John HANNEY, son 7, Scholar, born ditto HO107/1588/71/23
From FreeBMD Marriage for a Margaret HANNAY, Jun qtr 1851, Greenwich, 5 319. One of the grooms is a Thomas LAWRY.
This would fit with the marriage that Woody32 found in 1855. Thomas has died, and she met and married Frederick as a widow. The marriage in 1855 or one of the births of the children would confirm her name. The 1855 marriage will name the fathers as well.

Ian, can you find them in 1861 census? I am having no luck. Children Frederick/Kate/Louisa should be alive then. Could they be out of country? Margaret a second marrige for Frederick born 1821?
Cheers, Trish

Can't find them either in 1861. Found the HANNEYs in 1851. Here on Tilly's post on the Somerset board
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,404031.0.html
Margaret married Thomas LAWRY Jun qtr 1851. He has died more than likely and Margaret LAWRIE marries Frederick CLAYTON in Jun qtr 1855.
You are right, they should be in Cheshire, or perhaps moved back to Deptford.

So this is a duplicate post - and we are chasing some information which has already been found
Maybe the mods could merge topic to save us repeating ourselves???
