Whaley - Waller Surnames
« on: Friday 04 September 09 13:58 UTC (UK) »

In the topic Mary Ann Scott Marriage to a Whaley, Bedfordshire Boy mentioned the possible baptism of Mary Ann Whaley as Mary Ann Waller.  The name Waller has popped up several times in my research.  Were the surnames Whaley and Waller sometimes interchanged?  Or is Waller a completely separate, independent line?

Thanks,
George

With the majority of the country illiterate, the scribe, whether it was the vicar, parish clerk, or census enumerator, spelt names how he heard them and how he thought it should be spelt. Whaley, or as it's often spelt, Whalley, with a yokel Cambs accent might have been pronounced Waily, Wally, Waller, Worley or half a dozen other variations.

As the names Whaley and Waller appear to have been interchanged in this case then it seems as though the answer to your first question is yes, but equally I'm sure there are localities where the name Waller is the only spelling used.

You just have to bear in mind the number of possible spelling variations of the name

David

The National Burial Index lists the following as variations of Whaley:
Walely; Waley; Walie, Wallee; Walley; Walleye; Wallie; Wally; Wallye; Waly; Whalay; Whalaye; Whaleley; Whaley; Whaleye; Whalie; Whallay; Whalley; Whallie; Whally; Whallye; Whaly; Whalye
