Help to find address in Toronto in 1830s, please
« on: Friday 04 September 09 20:49 UTC (UK) »

Hi all  Smiley

I have an address from one of my Burgess letters written in the 1830s:

Lot 3 the 6 Consessions
East of the Centre Road
Toronto York
Upper Canada

Could anyone help me located on a modern map of Toronto, please.

Thanks

Well, here's a start.

A concession is 1.25 miles wide, if we assume Centre Road to be Yonge St  Undecided , then we are looking at an area somewhere in present day Scarborough.

Sorry  Embarrassed I'm all wrong, concessions ran north (i.e. parallel) to the lake.

Conc. 1 Queen St., 2 Bloor, 3 St Clair, 4 Eglinton, 5 Lawrence, 6 York Mills/Ellesmere.

So they were the 3rd lot east from Centre Road, north of York Mills (I think)  Huh I stand to be corrected Undecided

To clarify .... If Centre Road was indeed Yonge St. go north from the lake, up Yonge to York Mills Rd, turn east to the 3rd lot.

I'm not too sure how big a lot was in those days but I'll keep looking  Grin

I've got York Mills Road but not sure how far along Lot 3 would be - looks pretty posh.  Shocked

Thanks for your help, Genie  Kiss

It looks like it's  between Yonge and Bayview, north of York Mills.

He's on the censuses to 1871 but he'd moved to Peel by 1861 and was still there in 1871.

The 1851 Ag Census doesn't give very much info.  Is there anything before that  Undecided

The Upper Canada census or 1851 was actually delayed until 1852. It's the earliest one I know of.

Thanks, JJ  Smiley

Genie reckons that North of Bloor was pretty much 'natural state' in the 1830s/40s  so to get it agricultural would have taken some hard hard work.

Those pioneers were tough!

Good Morning Ladies,

Sorry to throw a wrench in, but I think you are in the wrong area.

Here's a map, it's from 1880, but Centre Road is not Yonge Street, it's off in the Etobicoke area.  You will see on the map, Britania and Derry Road.  I would say present area would be Mississauga which is now in the Regional Municipality of Peel.

You will also see that Miss Burgess has 50 acres at Lot 3, Conc. 6, ECR (East of Centre Road)
