Thomas Bernard (Hatter) died on 4 February 1851 aged 67 years old thus just missing the 1851 census! I'm unable to find a baptism for him in Berkshire. I would be very grateful if someone could search for him in the 1841 census please. In 1851 the family were living in Silver Street.
I can't help with the 1841 census - however did you notice on the 1851 just round the corner was 71 year old James Bernard an Umbrella maker - he was born in Sussex, but I am struggling to read the name of the place - it occured to me that there is good probability that this is Thomas's brother. If you want to see the page yourself to try, let me know and I will try and send it to you as a jpeg file

Thanks, I have the 1851 census entry and I suspect that James was Thomas's brother but I can't make out the name of the place in Sussex either. I was told via a friend that Thomas Bernard was born in Basingstoke in Hampshire but she wasn't told the source of this information and we're both wishing we could see the 1841 to confirm it either way!
You have realised that the birthplace for 1841 is only if in/out of county?
It's not going to help much in this case, even if found

All census look up transcriptions are Crown Copyright ====================================== Brown 1800 Dover -> Woolwich (Kent) Barnett 1800 Isleworth -> Woolwich Pannifer 1830 Suffolk -> Deptford Kent Brierley in Staffordshire(Pre-1875) Walters in Middlesex(Pre-1875) Clift,Gould in Devon/Cornwall
Sue - did you realise that the 1841 census dosn't give places of birth - just a yes or no as to wether the person was born in the county (in case Berkshire) so wether he was born in Hampshire or Sussex, it will just say not born in Berks
