Missing mother and daughter
« on: Saturday 05 September 09 11:06 UTC (UK) »

Some time ago I posted about my gggrandmother Emma Martin who seems to be is missing from the 1881 and 1891 cenuses...

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,368749.0.html

I still haven't found her but I have firmed up some of the information about her. I've recently been looking at her children and now find that her daughter Emily is also missing from those same censuses! Here's the information that I'm pretty sure of for each of them...

Emma Martin (nee Nickless) probably b.1841 at Kings Norton, reg Aston
1861 Working as servant for George Dixon
1863 Married Thomas Martin
1871 Family Living at Ravenhurst St, Aston
1881 - (Thomas and children living at Dial Lane, West Brom shown as Married)
1891 -  (Thomas and children living at Dial Lane, West Brom shown as Married)
1901 Emma and Thomas living at Redan Terrace, Balsall Heath
1911 Ditto (Emma's age 68, widowed brother also present)
1911 Dec qtr poss death at Solihull age 68

Emily Martin probably born 1866, Aston
1871 As above
1881 -
1891 -
1893 Possibly died at age 27 (June qtr, Aston)

On the 1911 two of their six children are shown to have died - I'm pretty sure Alfred died in 1898 at Dudley, perhaps Emily was the other?

One possible clue as to their joint absence is in the form of a family photo album - the first page has a  greetings card rather than a photo that says Christmas 1909 greetings from Lord and Lady Lewisham. I can't think why anyone in our family would have received such a card unless they were perhaps in service for the Lewishams (Legge family) - certainly the earls of Dartmouth had local residences. I can't find any trace of Emma or Emily with them though.

Any help or suggestions most welcome!

The only Martin listed under 'A' in West Midlands Death Index in 1898 is Amelia of the sub district of Sedgley.
There is an Alfred in 1892 also under Sedgley.
There is an Emily Martin death in 1893 at Tipton, also the same year an Emma at West Bromwich South West.
In 1894 there is Emmie G Martin at Dudley.
