locating early 1800's home in aberporth
« on: Saturday 05 September 09 14:00 UTC (UK) »

hi, im trying to find the home of my ggg grandparents of aberporth.

their home was called 'Y WAUN'.

the 1851 census record show it was next door to helygfach, penlon and helygfawr. the census records their house name as being 'wine' but this is obviously a spelling error by an english administrator who cant understand basic welsh spelling.  the family gravestone in aberporth churchyard confirms the house name as Y WAUN too.

i cant find the family in the 1841 census, why i have no idea but id just like to know if anyone knows anything id just really like to know where it was as its not standing today i dont think....

Hi

Y Waun as a proper name is the Welsh name for Chirk in Denbighshire. The ordinary word would be gwaun or y waun meaning  moor or meadow. so it would be situated in that type of terrain.  Have you tried looking at old-maps:

I've started looking but it does take a while  Undecided

It should be on the Tithe maps.

I've walked through the 1841 for Aberporth - only 6 pages  but I didn't see it listed and didn't know your families names so  Undecided

hi

his name is joseph davies born aberporth 1782-1786.
his wife is rachel was born c.1793 in penbryn / 'pembrin'. (neighboring parish)

in 1851 they both are living in 'wine' but although its in aberporth the census sheet says blaenporth, so id 100% expect the pair to be living in or around aberporth/penbryn area in 1841???

joseph died shortly after 1851 and rachel moved from y waun and thats the last ive ever heared of it Sad

Hi

I've walked through all of Blaenporth and Aberporth EDs  and there's no sign of them. Penbryn has quite a few EDs and I don't think my eyes can take more looking tonight.

sorry  Undecided

so does anyone know the reasons why families are / may have been left out of census?

is it just a simple error such as the guy who visited the houses to record the details just overlooked my families home? or are there many reasons e.g records are lost etc etc???

thanks Wink

Various reasons.

The head of each household had to complete what is called a household schedule, distributed ahead of time by the enumerator. These were then collected by the enumerator and the books filled in (as you see them) by him, so........

A household might have been missed at any of the stages or pages/pieces could be missing (this was particularly high in the 1861)

ah, i get you. - so that would explain why some 1861 records of different branches of my family are nowhere to be found!

so tell me, is there a template of one of these schedules available for us to see? id love to see what they had to try and fill in considering most would have been illiterate! Wink

thanks again Smiley

If you go here:

and scroll down the page, you'll see an example.

great stuff!

it seems that the childeren used to fill the schedule in as they were in attandance at sunday school or indeed school, and as such were more skilled at writing than the parents!

amazing thanks Wink

well just a little update on this and this might help others searching for housenames in ceredigion. a chap called iwan wmffre wrote a series of books not that long ago about all the housenames in ceredigion. its a colossal bit of work that surley deserves an award. anyway i found waun listed as being part of helyg fach, the present day name for a property neighbouring waun. it is listed as being present on an 1811 os map which i have to go to the national library to see.

so yes anybody researching house names should check it out, its in the archives on marine terrace, aberystwyth. it even details the first mention of the property back to 1594. unbelievable. Wink
