Bowles marriage help pls
« on: Sunday 06 September 09 00:54 UTC (UK) »

I am trying to establish the marriage of William Smith Bowles b Alburgh in c1811
The records I have seen seem to suggest two possibles.

The 1841 Census has a William Bowles married to Honor/Honoria. There is a William Bowles marriage to Honor Howlett on freereg in 1832 in Fritton.
There are several children including Robert b 1839
Death for Honor Bowles in 1847

The IGI has an unsubstantiated marriage for William Smith Bowles to Amelia in "about 1839"
There is a marriage for William Smith Bowles and Amelia Keable in 1849 in Marylebone (??) on freebmd
In 1851 Census there is a record for William and Amelia Bowles in Pulham Mary Magdalen, Nfk
There is also a Robert Bowles b 1839 in the household and an Elizabeth Bowles age 11 months.

I had thought that William (Smith) Bowles b 1811 had been married twice but the dates don't tally that well if the IGI record is to be believed

(William 1811 and Amelia had another child William 1852. Wm 1852 and sister Eliz- b Pulham - are later in West Derby/Liverpool.

I hope someone might be able to offer suggestions or opinion about whether this is the right track or even another marriage of a William Bowles and Amelia ? Or something which indicates the IGI is incorrect?  I've been going round in circles for a while....

Thanks,
Indigogirl

Hi Indigogirl.

My guess is that the IGI entry has been produced by someone who has looked at the 1851 census, and 'worked out' the family relationships from that.   I have come across one like this in my own family, where the IGI submitter has used the 1851 census as a source, and assumed that the wife is the first wife, and the mother of all the children present, when she was actually the second wife, and mother of only the younger children.

So they see William Smith Bowles married to Amelia with eldest son Robert born c1839, and assume that:

1) Amelia is Robert's mother (there is nothing to tell them otherwise on the census page)

and therefore
2) William and Amelia have been married since c1839.

The main clue that the IGI submitter is guessing (even before you check any real record) is the use of the word 'about' in the entry.

Thanks. Thats helpful. I hadn't realised that an IGI submission could be based on pure speculation.

I'm still left with why William and Amelia would get married in Marylebone tho rather than somewhere more local?

A death record suggests wife 1 Honour died 1847 (altho thinking about it this is possibly daughter Honor b 1834). Where might I look for a pre 1837 burial for Honour?

Could this marriage (in 1839) to Amelia have been bigamous with the purpose of giving a father's name to William and Elizabeths children??

I think you can safely  ignore the IGI entry  Smiley .

The 1832 marriage is likely to be the right one for William and Honor.
The 1841 census shows William and Honor together with their children.
The 1847 death of Honor Bowles is not the daughter - she is visiting the family of a man named Samuel Westgate in Shelton in 1851.

The 1849 marriage may have been in Marylebone because that is where Amelia was living at the time, or perhaps because they both wanted a quiet wedding, or maybe her family did not wish her to marry William.  (I would bet it was by licence).

Robert's birth certificate would show you who his mother was. Honor's death certificate would show you who her husband was and her age.  The 1849 marriage certificate should show you that William was a widower, and that his father was William.
