I have a Helen Barclay married to John/Owen Macartney but am having trouble finding either  birth or marriage dates. Her death certificate confirms she is my ancestor . She died in Craigleith Poorhouse, Edinburgh on the 29th December 1897. The death cert says she is 61 years of age,  the widow of Owen Macartney and her father is George Barclay shoemaker deceased and her mother is Helen Connolly ? ( difficult to read on certificate ) . The witness is her daughter Helen Lang. All this info confirms her as my ancestor. However I cannot find a confirmed marriage certificate or birth certificate . At least none of what I am finding fits. I suspect her age on her death cert is wrong.
Any help with this would be very welcome.

Hi Mike

Can't see a marriage for Helen and John/Owen but likely this was before 1855 and the start of official registration. There is however a birth showing for one of their children:

MARY MC CARTNEY Birth: 23 NOV 1855 Edinburgh Parish, Edinburgh

This first year of official reg. will include date and place of parents' marriage, their ages, where they were born. Also, how many children they'd had (girls/boys, alive/deceased).

A good cert for you to look at  Smiley

This looks to be the family in 1861:

Owen McCartney 45, Hawker Clothes b. Ireland
Ellen McCartney 40 b. Canongate
John McCartney 20, brewer b. Edinburgh
Ellen McCartney 10  b. Edinburgh
Mary McCartney 5 b. Edinburgh
James McCartney 2 b. Edinburgh

Address:133 Cowgate, Edinburgh

Her age at death in 1897 looks nearly 20 years light  Roll Eyes

It's all coming back to me now Luckydog...the names began to ring bells www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,352843.0.html

These are the families that all like to play around with first names  Grin

Good to see you found Helen's death details. Although the 1861 census showed Helen as born in Canongate, she was actually born in Ireland.....so that 1855 birth cert for daughter Mary will be your best shot at trying to find where in Ireland John/Owen and Helen came from.

Thanks Monica , this part of my family history is quite complex so I had forgotten the previous posts and had also being concentrating on the McGonigal/Christie conundrum which is now resolved resulting in many additions to the tree.
Have checked Mary McCartney birth certificate, don't know why I had not found it before, and it gives a lot of good info about the family including that John came from County Louth . However it still gives Helens birthplace as Edinburgh. Her age on her death certificate is definitely wrong.
So thanks again.
