Does anyone know the Somerset POPLES please?
« on: Sunday 06 September 09 22:18 UTC (UK) »

Hi,
I'm trying to find out more about the POPLE family that originated from Somerset.  I have a John Pople bc1770 who married Elizabeth Windsor and they had at least 4 children Ann, Charles, Alfred and Christiana between 1794-1800.   Charles' birth place is listed as Athelney but he became Postmaster in Cardingham Bedfordshire in 1851 census.  Any information on the Poples gratefully received.
Many thanks

Hello DJ
Do you have a place in Somerset for your Poples. It is a local name and crops up in many parishes.

Any idea of place will help narrow the search but certainly in North Somerset it is reasonably common

Regards
Sue

Hi Dj
Athelney is in the Sedgemoor area of Somerset - Bridgwater being the nearest town. This link tells you a little more of the area

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Athelney

There are some parish registers on line for Stoke St Gregory but I cannot find any Poples for the period of 18th Century.
The parishes of Lyng and North Curry could also have been used by your ancestors. I cannot find any online registers.

It maybe worth writing to the library in Bridgwater who have a local studies dept and also Somerset Record office.
If Bridgwater library have some parish records for this area please let me know by Pm and I will go and look them up for you if this would help.

Kind regards
Sue

Hi Sue,
Many thanks for your reply.  I will have to dig deeper; at the moment I don't have any other information but many thanks for your offer.  Hopefully I will be able to take it up sometime.

I have Poples in my family. I have a James Pople bap. 1787 Woolavington who marr. Mary Field at Westonzoyland 1812. I have little info. on them but know they moved to Chilton Polden where children born. Don't suppose its much help as I doubt there is a connection. Regards, Syljun

Hi Suljun,
Thanks for your notes but I've not found anything further so can't say if there is a connection.
