One way to find out without ploughing through the registers of several possible cemeteries is to ask someone to look in the local papers for a death announcement a day or a few days after the death, which often gives details of funeral and burial. The evening papers then were the Liverpool Echo and Evening Express.

The evening papers then were the Liverpool Echo and Evening Express. Both are on film at the Liverpool Central Library, 4th floor.

Hi Maureen,
This may not help so much, but it's worth bearing in mind...
By 1903, most of Liverpool's municpal cemeteries were open and in use, as many of the local churchyards were overcrowded.
The main multi-denomination cemeteries at this time were Everton, Anfield and Kirkdale. Others followed, but in my own experience, most of of my ancestors who lived in the Everton area are buried in Kirkdale Cemetery!
It gets even more confusing as a few of the cemeteries are not actually in the area that they're named after! For example, Kirkdale Cemetery is located in Fazakerley, as is Everton Cemetery, and West Derby Cemetery is located in Norris Green!!!
I'll be going along to the Liverpool Record Office soon anyway, so if you PM me the specific details of your Great grandfather's death I'll take a look, as I need to search the cemetery records myself, starting with Anfield.
As regards local papers there was also the Liverpool Mercury and Liverpool Courier too, as well as the Liverpool Echo, Daily Post and Liverpool Evening Express...
Paul
