My Grandfather Robert Lindsay Davidson, lived latterly (at least) in Glover Street Perth, He was a joiner and cabinet maker, he married twice.His first wife was Margaret Robertson (my Grandmother) who died, they had two children William (my father) and Catherine whowas unmarried.
I cannot give his date of birth or where he was born, but it would have been in and around Perth.. His mother`s name was Susan Lindsay Davidson, other names connected to the family somewhere are Dickson - Hay - Robertson - Burns.

Hi Fortune - welcome to RootsChat. Hope you enjoy your stay there. 
Your grandfather died March 28th 1954 at Pinel Lodge, Murthly, although he usually stayed at 23 Glover Street. He was 82 and his parents were William Davidson, railway inspector (deceased) and Susan Davidson, m.s. [maiden surname] Lindsay (also deceased). Only one wife listed - a Margaret Laing? - was she his second wife?
I believe this is his birth as extracted from the IGI, which Carole kindly gave the link to.
Robert Lindsay Davidson, born May 2nd 1871 in Perth - his parents are listed as William Davidson and Susan Lindsay. Another search shows he had a brother James (born 1872 in Perth) and a sister Jane (born 1874 in Perth). Their parents married July 1st 1870 in Arbroath, Angus.

Just looked at all the lovely infprmation Hume and Carole have provided so quickly - now gives me something to work on.
Obviously the Lindays are my next port of call. together with my grandmother who I think was Margaret Robertson,she died, I believe at the age of 32 when my father william and his sister Catherine were 4 and 2 years of age respectively.Margaret Laing was his second wife, as you suggested, but no blood link to me.

I have managed to find Robert and Margaret Davidson on the 1901 census, along with their son William - your father?
Address: 353 High Street, Perth, Perthshire
Robert L. Davidson, head, mar., 29, house joiner, b. Perth
Margaret Davidson, wife, mar., 27, -, b. Auchterarder, Perthshire
William Davidson, son, unm., 1, -, b. Perth
Margaret died October 4th 1904 at the same address. She was the daughter of Charles Robertson, woollen warehouseman and Catherine Burns (who was deceased by that date).
This is her birth from the IGI:
Margaret Robertson, b. June 23rd 1872 Auchterarder - parents Charles Robertson and Catherine Burns. They married May 19th 1857 in Perth.
