St Peters Hudderfield Baptisms - Earnshaw
« on: Tuesday 08 September 09 20:21 UTC (UK) »

Hi

I'm looking for the baptisms of John Earnshaw, born about 1806 and his brother Benjamin born about 1813 in Paddock, Huddersfield.  Mother is called Mary but I can't find their father's name.

Can anyone help please?

Thanks

Hi

I've checked my transcripts for St Peters, Huddersfield but neither John or Benjamin are listed.

Thanks for checking.  Maybe they were baptised at a different church.  I'll have to check which other churches in the area were doing baptisms around that date.

There's a John EARNSHAW baptised at Kirkburton in 1809 with mother named Mary but there's no Benjamin to match.  There's nothing at Almondbury either sorry.

There is this Benjamin;

Benjamin EARNSHAW, 13 July 1813, High Street Chapel Methodist New Connection, Huddersfield, Yorkshire
+ Sarah, 1803 ( under Hearnshaw)
+ Jane, 1807
Parents JOSEPH and MARY

No John though.

Thanks very much everyone for looking!  The Methodist one is a possible as Benjamin was buried in Lindley Zion burial ground, although his mother Mary was buried at Paddock All Saints.

As I only have information on the family from the 1841 census it's possible that there were two sisters also that I haven't previously found.

Something else for me to puruse now anyway.  Many thanks!

Sorry to be a pest, would it be possible to check if Joseph and Mary were married at the High Street Methodist chapel?

Also, is there a baptism for an Abraham Earnshaw, born about 1819?

thanks again

I think the entries from the High Street Methodist Chapel were from the IGI.  I've checked for an Abraham but there isn't one there HOWEVER there is an Abraham at St Peters, Huddersfield and looking at the PRs the full entry is -

Abraham EARNSHAW
bap 11/04/1819
father Joseph
mother Mary
abode Paddock
occ Cloth Dresser

Hi Claire,
Sorry to ask but noticed your HOYLE connection.
I have just recently added a Hoyle to my Tree. Just this moment found this marriage.

Hannah HOYLE
Joseph HAIGH
05 December 1799, Huddersfield, Yorkshire
(submitted record)

Daughter- Martha Haigh, christened 30 July 1809, Buckley Hill Congregational, Marsden YKS ( extracted)

Martha married James SHAW, 1832, Huddersfield .
Their son John (1835-1905) emigrated to NZ and is my g/grandfather.

If you have the ability to check the marriage is correct I would really appreciate it.

Cheers,
Trish

Thanks very much Trish and Claire. You've both been really helpful.

I have Mary and Joseph Earnshaw both buried at Paddock All Saints.  Not sure how I can check if it's all the same family but I'll persevere.

Good luck with your researches!

Are they buried with anyone else?  I take it Joseph died before the 1841 census where Mary appears on her own surrounded by her children?

Joseph died in February 1941 and Mary died in 1852.  I have no other information, Paddock All Saints is derelict and the gravestones have been removed so the only information I've got is from the Kirkheaton OPC.  I'm not even sure if Joseph is the correct one, although the address for Mary is correct - Paddock Nab - so I'm pretty sure that's my ggg grandmother.

You could order the burials film from your local LDS library or ask someone to look at Huddersfield for you - it could give you the certainty you're looking for.
