Montague Rabey Moss (1863-1894)
« on: Tuesday 08 September 09 21:19 UTC (UK) »

Hi Everyone

I'm looking up the fellow named in the title (isn't the name incredible?) So far, I have the following information on him:

He was born in Dec 1863. His birth was registered in Kensington, London.

He married in Jun 1885, either to Elizabeth Lyons or Elizabeth Penhorwood. The marriage was registered in Wandsworth, London. On the record, his middle name is listed as ‘Raby.’

Appears to have died around Mar 1894. The death was recorded in Wandsworth, London.

My problem is this - I can't find a trace of him on the censuses for 1881 and 1891. All I can think is that it's the misspelt name scenario, which seems likelt due to the oddness of the name. I've tried variations of it, but none of them work.

Even odder is that I can't find a trace of his mother either, and I am quite sure she was still alive. She's Sarah Elizabeth Moss nee Crane, and was born in Deptford, Kent in 1828.

As you can imagine, I'm a bit confused! Can anyone offer any suggestions/help?

Thanks,

Rachael

A transcription would be brilliant if you can get one for me. I'm still a bit of an amateur at all this! Thanks for digging the info out.

That's brilliant, thanks!

It looks like they probably didn't have any children, though I'll probably have to try and find Elizabeth on the 1901 census to find out for sure.

No wonder you couldn't find Montague.

The entry on the 1891 Census has him as "Wintapee" Moss!

Wow, I've heard of some pretty incredible mispellings but that really takes the biscuit. I wonder what shape his name took on the 1881 census? I bet it's something equally remarkable.

In 1851, Sarah Elizabeth states that she was born Paddington, so do you have this from 1891?

RG12/1076 Folio 24 Page 41
2 Alfred Cotts, Lansdown R, Tottenham, Middlesex

William E Hemblen? (Hamblin maybe?) 40 General Labourer Fulham
Charlotte E 40? Nurse Sick Kensington
Sarah E Moss widow mother in law 63 Cook Paddington
