War Bride Help Please - SLORACH / CHAMBERS COMPLETED THANKS!
« on: Wednesday 09 September 09 13:31 UTC (UK) »

Having just found a record for a missing war bride; Jessie SLORACH b 1927, I'm trying to find out as much as possible about what happened to her after she left Glasgow.

She married Ronald Wallace CHAMBERS (b 1924) in 1945 in Glasgow.

I don't have a fmp sub, so can't look up the war bride passenger lists, so would really appreciate it if someone has a spare few minutes to look up Jessie CHAMBERS.

Is there any way I can look online for their deaths (in the last 20 years so very recent) as I am trying to figure where in Canada they moved.

Any help is appreciated.

Regards

Tracey

Hi Tracey
There is a Jessie Crichton Chambers who emigrated 1946.
Do you have a copy of her marriage cert, it would show (hopefully) where Ronald came from.  Every province has its own database.  Do you know his occupation after the war, that sometimes narrows the field.

I think that it's the right person. It lists her husband as Pte. R.W. Did she live at Dennistown, Glasgow before she left? She was headed to Toronto. Unfortunately, these are just the Canadian Wives Bureau records not actual ship manifests so it doesn't say when she left in 1946 or what ship she was on.

Yes that sounds like her! She definitely lived in Dennistoun in Glasgow before she left.
I haven't seen the original marriage cerificate so I don't know how it lists Ronald's place of birth.
I didn't know if she had a middle name so I can't confirm Crichton.
But thanks for the Toronto reference.
I cant believe I have wondered about her for years, but thought she would be difficult to find due to it being recent history.

Now to figure out how on earth I may be able to find her children (two I have names for).

I would just like to say thanks to Annette for the links Smiley

And here is the wedding picture that I *think* is Ronald and Jessie. Sorry, it is a bit worn (think it meant a lot so was often looked at)

Any info from the picture is greatly received, about the uniform etc.

Many Thanks
Tracey

I haven't seen the original marriage cerificate so I don't know how it lists Ronald's place of birth.
I didn't know if she had a middle name so I can't confirm Crichton.

I can now confirm:
Ronald was born in Toronto in abt 1924
Jessie's middle name was Crichton
They had at least two children who will hopefully still be alive and well.

Its all coming together.

Hello Tracey,

If someone has credits left on Ancestorsonboard www.ancestorsonboard.com perhaps they would look
up Jessie passenger record. She is there listed as coming to Canada 1946. My credits have run out.

Here is another website to check out  Toronto Star at pagesofthepast.ca  This is a pay per view site very reasonable. If you do not have dates it can take a while to search through the site. I have used this site
in the past .

Good luck

Hello again Tracey,

Here is another website to try http:www,warbrides.co.uk

I entered her name as Jessie Chambers and she was listed. Follow the directions for the site.

I have only used this site once before but have not had time to follow through  so am not sure what you get.

Hope this helps.

On the passenger list, it notes her address in Scotland as 71 Eveline St, Dennistown, Glasgow and the address in Canada is an Aunt, Mrs M. Jackson, 131 Collier St in Toronto.  The list is a vast 108 pages of returning war brides and their families but it does not list the ship she travelled on.  The transcript states that she sailed in 1946 from Southampton with destination simply 'Canada'.

If you would like a copy, please send me a PM with your email address and I'll forward it to you.
